Room for Two: Capella Singapore

Heading to Singapore but don’t want to stay in a bland high-rise hotel in the city? Make your way to Capella Singapore, a luxe property located in a tropical garden paradise on the island of Sentosa, just a ten minute taxi ride from the city.

Once a posh home for British Army officers and their families, the four heritage buildings (which date back to the 1880s) have been skilfully repurposed as this grand hotel’s reception and public spaces, and blended with a stunningly modern design by world famous architects, Foster + Partners. The new hotel extends out from the original buildings and is ravishingly curvaceous, with deep sheltered walkways and vertical, earth-toned screens designed to shade from the tropical sun – a perfect blend of old world charm and new-world technology.

Accommodation

Singapore is not known for its spacious rooms, with most often only modest in size. The rooms, suites and villas at Capella, though,  are some of the most generously sized in the city. Housed in the main building, the rooms and suits offer views over the busy harbour. For an extra touch of glamour, Capella’s pool villas step down the natural contours of the sloping land and are surrounded by dense foliage, including over 5,000 trees. Families, groups or those wanting to stage a special event will love the 436-square-metre Colonial Manors. Situated in the historical buildings, they offer a true home-away-from-home experience.

Our 133 square metre, one-bedroom pool villa was drop-dead gorgeous. A large lounge area leads onto a terrace with a private plunge pool and sun loungers, while inside there’s everything you could possibly want for a comfortable stay, including a Bose sound system and Nespresso coffee maker.

Moving to the bedroom,  a huge king-sized bed with push-button technology to open/close the curtains and blinds, adjust the air conditioner and turn the lights on/dim/off promises a good night’s rest. The separate bathroom boasts his-and-her sinks, a rain shower and a dressing room, plus there’s an outside bathroom with rain shower and deep soaking tub.
