We first visited Mirissa Beach nearly 15 years ago and fell in love with it. We visited again recently and noticed it’s now quite well-known and busier than before. But it’s still wonderful and well worth a visit.
Situated along Sri Lanka’s southern coastline, Mirissa is known for its marine biodiversity. It offers incredible opportunities to see magnificent whales in their natural habitat. These waters are full of life from November through April, offering unforgettable whale-watching expeditions. During this season, Mirissa becomes a bustling hub, filled with anticipation and excitement – with a remarkable success rate of 98% in spotting whales, participants are virtually guaranteed an enthralling experience. Beyond the stars of the show – blue and sperm whales – sightings often include playful dolphins, graceful turtles, and an array of other marine life.
An advance booking is required to secure a coveted spot during the peak season. Some operators even offer a “whale guarantee,” ensuring another tour free of charge if whales prove elusive.
