5. Extreme hiking in China
Where: Huashan, 120km east of Xi’ian, China
What: Huashan translates as “Flower Mountain”. It sounds gentle and pretty, but it’s actually home to a pretty extreme hiking route. Made up of five peaks, the highest and most treacherous is the South Peak (around 2,100m). To reach the summit you’ll face sheer cliffs and plunging ravines – via a route that includes a terrifying wooden plank walkway. It’s just a foot wide and is fixed to a sheer rock face a kilometre above the ground (but don’t worry, you’ll have a chain to hold on to). The trek is hardcore and hard work, but an unforgettable experience. The views are breathtaking and the entire route is packed with ancient Chinese culture and history, including Taoist temples and pavilions.
