2. Volcano boarding in Nicaragua

Where: Cerro Negro, part of the Los Maribios volcanic chain, Nicaragua

What: Love surfing? Snow boarding? How about sliding down a volcano? Extreme boarders can reach speeds of up to 80km per hour as they scream down the side of Cerro Negro (“The Black Hill”) in Nicaragua. Volcano boarding became a “thing” here in 2004, after a complete nutter legend decided it might be fun to take a ride on a minibar fridge… down a volcano. He then tried a mattress and his front door before finally constructing the world’s first volcano board. And lo, a new adventure sport was born. The hike to the top of the volcano takes about an hour – the trip back down is significantly shorter. Oh, and did we mention Cerro Negro is a live volcano? It’s erupted 23 times since its formation in 1850. The last time was in 1999 – another eruption is overdue, just in case you needed to up the excitement factor.
