Asian Islands For Two – Song Saa, Cambodia

In Articles, Holiday Reviews - Asia, Holiday Reviews - Cambodia, Islands & Beaches by The H4C Team

After discovering twin islands Koh Ouen and Koh Bong 25 minutes off the coast of Sihanoukville, known locally as Song Saa – Khmer for ‘The Sweethearts’ – then honeymooners, Rory and Melita Hunter decided to devote their married lives to safeguarding this undiscovered virgin paradise.

Seven years on, the 27 spacious water, jungle and ocean view villas, lie at the heart of a private marine reserve – Cambodia’s first – which protects one million square metres of the islands’ reefs and marine life. Villas have been constructed using sustainable materials recovered from the beach.

Even desks and chairs have been crafted from fishing boats that were no longer seaworthy, enabling their former owners to finance a new vessel to support their families. And in keeping with Song Saa’s eco-conscious philosophy, the resort’s team of four expatriate chefs, led by executive chef Neil Wager (who has cooked for Prince Andrew, David Beckham and Brad Pitt) uses ingredients cultivated in the onsite organic garden or sourced from local sustainable farmers and fishermen (Rooms from US$970).
