Cool cellar doors

If the Yarra Valley is known for one thing it’s its wine. There are almost countless cellar doors to discover in the region, but for one that makes you feel as if you’ve wandered into provincial France visit Coldstream’s Dominique Portet. Relocating from Bordeaux (and taking with them its charms), the Portet family have been making wine for an impressive 10 generations, so they really know their stuff.

Also worth visiting in the area is Coldstream Hills (just four minutes’ drive from Dominique Portet). Known for its chardonnay, this picture-perfect vineyard was founded and distinguished by famed Australian wine writer, James Halliday. For another ‘big name’, head up the road to Domaine Chandon (of Moët & Chandon). There’s a tasting bar and cellar door to check out – serious wine-lovers, book yourselves a guided tour.
