Casual eats

If you’re after something a little more laid-back, make your way to the cheekily namedInnocent Bystander in Healesville (just over an hour’s drive northeast of Melbourne). A real foodie gem, this trendy hangout is home to a restaurant, café, bar and cellar door. Find a table and treat yourselves to an authentic, artisan Italian-style wood-fired pizza with a glass of Innocent Bystander’s wines or cider.

For something truly relaxed, visit the Yarra Valley Farmers Market in Yarra Glen (if you time it right). Held all year round from 9am to 2pm in the historic barn at Yering Station on Sundays, the market is filled with rows and rows of brilliant local artisans’ goods. After grabbing yourselves a coffee, enjoy taste-testing your way around the market and pick up your favourite goodies for a lunchtime picnic. There’s an array of beautiful picnic spots in the Yarra Valley (Upper Yarra Reservoir Park and Badger Weir Picnic Area are lovely options) – pack yourselves a hamper and dine al fresco for a romantic experience.
