They choose a single resort, then spend the week sitting in traffic, chasing an island that changes completely every hour or two down the road. Days 3 and 4: wake with the sunrise, Sanur

The island’s first beach town remains its most unhurried, low-rise and leafy, and Kayumanis keeps just twelve villas here, in what was historically a priestly village; the estate carries that settled temperament.

The villas at Sanur are the most residential of the four: each sits within its own walled garden compound with a semi-open lounge, a kitchen and a pool wrapped in deck, so days take on the rhythm of living in a beautiful private house. Gong, the signature restaurant, cooks up-market Balinese food built on local herbs and spice, but the night to plan for is the one you spend entirely at home: a candlelit barbecue for two, prepared and cooked within your own compound as the light fades, with nobody else in the world invited.

Days 5 and 6: find Bali’s soul, Ubud

From Sanur the road climbs inland through villages and rice terraces to Ubud, the cultural heart of the island, and to the most atmospheric estate of the four. Kayumanis Ubud sits on a slope above the Ayung River, studded with the cinnamon trees that gave the brand its name.
