The Quiet Heart of Seminyak’s Eat Street

On Jalan Kayu Aya, Bali’s most famous dining strip, Amadea Resort & Villas gives couples a calm, garden-backed base at the heart of Seminyak.

Seminyak has earned its reputation. Jalan Kayu Aya, known to everyone as Eat Street, runs some of Bali’s best dining along a single strip: white-tablecloth institutions beside warungs, cocktail bars spilling onto the pavement at dusk. The usual price of such an address is noise. At number 55, a short driveway turns off the street into the gardens of Amadea Resort & Villas, where frangipani shade two long lap pools, and the noise drops away. It is a trick we have leaned on for more than a decade; Amadea is where we send friends who love to shop and dine, and still want a calm base to return to.

By eight, delivery scooters thread down Kayu Aya and café shutters rattle up; none of it carries past the gate. On the garden side, the day begins with slow laps and coffee at a terrace table. The resort is built around this arrangement: step into Seminyak whenever you want, then disappear again.

Your Own Quiet Corner of Kayu Aya

Open the doors of a Deluxe Pool Terrace room and the pool is at your feet, the day’s first swim beginning on your own terrace. Inside wait a king-size bed and a bathtub the team will strew with petals for a flower bath at dusk. Couples marking an occasion can book the Romantic Escape Package: the room, daily breakfast, a 60-minute Balinese massage for two and a romantic dinner. All of it metres from Seminyak’s most sought-after strip, though you would never know.

Bring the Other Couples

Milestone birthdays, anniversaries and friends’ weddings elsewhere on the island tend to grow into group trips, and Amadea’s seven pool villas absorb them without anyone tripping over anyone else. Holidays for Couples has celebrated a fortieth and, years later, a seventy-fifth birthday in the four-bedroom villa; for a group of couples with something to mark, it is the first place we think of. Behind each villa’s own gate sit a private pool, a garden, an airy lounge and a full kitchen. Six of the villas have two bedrooms and connecting doors, so two or three couples can book side by side and open the doors into a single compound; the four-bedroom villa sleeps up to twelve and adds an entertainment room. The rest of the party can take suites or rooms in the main resort, and the team will bring the celebration to the villa, with a dinner party by the pool or a barbecue in the garden. When the group wants a bigger stage, Eat Street is on the other side of the wall.

Bliss on Eat Street

It is faintly surreal that a spa one storey above one of Bali’s busiest streets can feel a million miles from where it is, but the rooftop Ambiente Spa manages it. The menu runs from foot reflexology, facials and manicures to a traditional Balinese massage, the 20 Fingers (two therapists in tandem) and the 90-minute Shirodhara Ritual: a foot bath and full-body massage before warm oil is poured in a slow stream across the forehead. Need more ways to relax? Complimentary yoga runs Monday and Thursday mornings, and the Garden Cinema on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

The Best of Bali: So Many Ways

Start with the buffet breakfast at Asparagus Resto & Bar, then head out onto Kayu Aya for another coffee between Seminyak’s best boutiques. When the midday heat hits, it is the perfect excuse to slip back down Amadea’s long driveway, far from the busyness outside. Then come the choices: the air-conditioned calm of the rooftop spa, a book by the pool between the shaded umbrellas and a few laps, or a sneaky rest back in your room. Late afternoon, after a drink at the pool bar, head out again: the fifteen-minute walk to Petitenget Beach, where locals lay offerings at the sea temple as the sun drops, or sunset cocktails at Ku De Ta. Dinner is the easiest decision, with dozens of restaurants within minutes’ walk, and La Favela’s eccentric, jungle-filled rooms for the nights when dinner is not quite enough and the fun has to continue.

When to Go

April to October brings the most reliable sunshine, and the festive weeks over Christmas and New Year have their own energy. Getting there: direct flights from most Australian capitals to Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport, then a 30-minute taxi, or book a hotel car for airport pickup. Outside the gate, Eat Street will keep doing what Eat Street does; inside, the frangipani barely move, and the noise, as ever, drops away.
