Bali has no shortage of beaches, but finding the best swimming beaches on the Island of the Gods can be surprisingly tricky. Much of the coastline is famous for surf breaks and strong currents, yet many visitors come wanting to swim, not surf. The good news? The island also has calm coves, sheltered bays, and stretches of white sand where couples can swim safely and enjoy Bali’s warm, clear water — if you know where to find them.
Having lived in Bali, I know firsthand how important it is to choose the right spot, and how long it took me to uncover the safest, most beautiful beaches for swimming. This comprehensive guide highlights the top swimming beaches in Bali, including the most reliable places for gentle waves, lagoon-like shallows, and relaxed days by the sea. Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, a romantic escape, or simply want to cool off somewhere stunning, these beaches offer ideal conditions for an easy, enjoyable swim.

1. Sanur Beach: Everybody’s Favourite

Sanur Beach, with its smooth, white sands and gentle waves, is a haven for couples and families. This charming coastal town is located in the southeast region of Bali, about half an hour from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The shallow waters here are perfect for young children, while the stunning coral reefs offer a snorkelling paradise.
The proximity of a reef makes Sanur a fantastic spot for spotting tropical fish. You are spoilt for choice with activities here, like banana boating and jetskiing, not to mention the array of beach lounges and umbrellas for hire at a super affordable price. The restaurants are a standout reason to stay all day, from top-notch luxe dining to cosy beachfront eats. With its shallow waters and safe environment, Sanur Beach is an excellent choice for a family day out at the beach.

2. Padang Padang Beach – Cliffside Beauty

You may recognise Padang Padang Beach from the famous Eat Pray Love film, which is only one of the reasons this spot is a very well-loved oasis. The walk to the beach is a journey down over 100 stairs, but we can assure you the small trek is worth it.
Whilst Padang Padang Beach is known as one of Bali’s best and most famous surfing locations, this cliffside beauty is a picture-perfect haven for a day spent dipping in and out of the water. Surrounding streets are filled with endless dining options to complete the day and charming stores with all kinds of local treasures like jewellery, clothes and souvenirs.
3. Echo Beach: For the Adventurous Swimmers

Canggu is home to Echo Beach, a surfer’s dream and a swimmer’s delight at low tide. While the strong waves and consistent swell attract surfers from around the world, the beach can also offer a vibrant atmosphere for swimmers, safest at low tide. Echo Beach is a picture-perfect sunset spot, but be sure to time the evening well, as there are no longer any local warungs on the beach for dinner.
Past eruptions from volcanoes cause the black sand here and make Echo Beach a wonderfully unique spot in the hustle and bustle of Canggu!
4. Nusa Dua Beach: The Quintessential Swim Spot

The calm waters and safe swimming environment of Nusa Dua Beach make it one of Bali’s best swimming spots. The waters here are gorgeous, boasting pristine and shallow conditions, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Nusa Dua’s subtly luxurious vibe offers a blend of elegance and adventure (if you’re up for it!) with an array of relaxing water activities like paddleboarding, snorkel tours, and kayaking. So, whether you’re looking to swim in the calm waters or relax on the beach, Nusa Dua Beach is the place to be.
5. Jimbaran Bay Beach: The Calm Oasis

Nestled between rugged cliffs and golden sands, Jimbaran Bay Beach is another beach perfect for families, thanks to its calm waters. Whilst less ideal for surfers, Jimbaran Bay stretches around 4km and is easy to find with fewer crowds than some nearby swimming spots, making it even better if you’re travelling with children. Jimbaran is famous for its fantastic seafood restaurants and stellar sunsets, a perfect combination to complete a beachside day!

6. Bingin Beach: Swim with the Surfers

Uluwatu’s Bingin Beach is an absolute ocean lover heaven! If surfing is more your thing, there is ample opportunity to ride the waves here (or even book a surf lesson), but the towering limestone cliffs and secluded energy make it great for swimming. Like many Uluwatu beaches, be prepared to walk up and down many stairs to reach this paradise, but once you emerge to the beach, we promise you will agree with us that it is worth the effort.
If you can stay the whole day, it is no secret that sunsets in Bali are beautiful, and Bingin Beach is another perfect backdrop to stick around and embrace the gorgeous pink and orange hues.

7. Padang Bai Beach: The Day Trip Beach

With its clear and calm waters, Padang Bai Beach is an excellent day-tripper option. This beach is the main stretch of sand in Padang Bai, an area in eastern Bali near Candidasa. Padang Bai Beach offers a local vibe, with charming local fishing boats often lined up along the shore, making it an excellent choice for those looking to experience the local culture.
If you’re keen to mix up swimming with some culture, many magical temples in Padang Bai have spectacular views and are very close to the beach. Our standout is Pura Segara, the famous “Lake Temple” on the edge of Lake Batur. Padang Bai is around an hour’s drive from Ubud or Sanur, dependent on traffic, making it an easy feat for a memorable day!
8. Blue Lagoon: Swim with Turtles and Nemo

As the name suggests, the stunning Blue Lagoon will capture your heart with its vibrant turquoise waters and rich marine life waiting to be explored. Blue Lagoon is a gorgeous secluded spot, making it a beautiful space for swimming and a snorkelling paradise full of colourful coral and fish amongst the reefs. There is plenty of opportunity to hire snorkelling gear from the local sellers when you arrive, but if you want to get the most out of your time here, why not book a snorkelling tour ahead of time? So, whether you want to swim with turtles or spot clownfish, Blue Lagoon is the place to be.
9. Amed Beach: The All-Rounder

Amed Beach is a haven of calm waters and striking black sand nestled in North Bali. Unlike some of Bali’s more touristy spots, it offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds and a wonderfully laid-back vibe. It’s the perfect place to spend a leisurely day—or even a few—with plenty of water-based activities like diving tours and snorkelling around its numerous reefs.
While you can snorkel right off Amed Beach, nearby Jemeluk Bay beckons with its underwater wonders, including fascinating underwater statues. After a day of exploration, you can unwind at the local warungs lining the streets, where you’ll discover delicious local favourites awaiting your palate. Amed truly offers a serene escape for those seeking both adventure and relaxation in Bali.
10. Virgin Beach: The Pristine Hideaway

Also known as White Sand Beach, Virgin Beach is a pristine hideaway in East Bali that offers excellent conditions for swimming. Virgin Beach is one of Bali’s best-kept secrets, and despite the colourful umbrellas and sun loungers, it still maintains a local vibe.
Located on the sunrise side of Bali, expect the best light in the morning and early afternoon, so make the most of the mornings here and find a more prime sunset spot instead. There are many ways to relax here, from a beachfront massage to a meal at any of the countless Warungs.
11. Lovina Beach: Swim with the Dolphins

You’ve probably heard of it before, and with good reason: Lovina Beach in North Bali! This place is renowned for its dolphin swimming experiences. There are plenty of options for dolphin tours here, so take your time to find the one that suits you best. Swimming with dolphins in their natural habitat will undoubtedly be a highlight of your Bali trip.
If you’re up for a swim, Lovina Beach is usually very safe with its gentle conditions and sheltered cove. Our tip? Set an early alarm to catch the breathtaking sunrise, especially if you’re planning a dolphin tour. Just a heads-up: expect locals to approach you selling various souvenirs. Politely decline if you’re not interested—it can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared for it!
12. Pemuteran Beach: The Secret Swimming Spot

Discover a hidden paradise for swimming on Bali’s northwest coast: Pemuteran Beach. This serene beach features soft black sand and calm, clear waters, ideal for a peaceful swim. Pemuteran is renowned for its picturesque bay, offering perfect swimming conditions and the option to rent sun loungers for a relaxing day by the sea. Nearby Pulau Menjangan, part of the West Bali National Park, beckons with pristine coral gardens and excellent diving opportunities. Accommodation options in Pemuteran range from eco-luxe resorts and diving hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses catering to all travellers. Pemuteran is renowned for its community-driven efforts in sustainable tourism and environmental conservation, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil and eco-friendly getaway in Bali.

13. Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida – Clear, Calm, Beautiful

Crystal Bay is one of Nusa Penida’s only reliably swimmable beaches — a sheltered cove with clear water, a sandy bottom, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s not for toddlers (the drop-off is quick), but for confident swimmers it’s ideal. You’ll find sunbeds, a couple of local stalls for drinks, and enough space to actually float around without battling waves.
It’s also a natural stop on any Nusa Penida day trip, which makes it an easy addition to a holiday or honeymoon itinerary.
14. Bias Tugel Beach – Padang Bai’s Secret “Blue Lagoon” Sister
Just around the corner from Padang Bai’s harbour, Bias Tugel is a small, sheltered bay with bright, calm water and a relaxed atmosphere. It requires a short 10-minute walk down, which keeps it quiet and peaceful compared to the more popular beaches nearby. Water conditions are usually manageable, especially in the morning when the sea is at its calmest.
There are a few simple warungs for drinks and snacks, plus soft sand that makes it easy to stay for the day.
It’s a great under-the-radar option for couples wanting something serene without leaving the mainland.
15. Pandawa Beach – Calm Waters With Dramatic Limestone Backdrops
Pandawa is one of South Bali’s most reliable swimming beaches — clear water, gentle waves, and soft sand. It’s clean, well-managed, and framed by dramatic limestone cliffs that give it a scenic kick without compromising safety.
There’s plenty of space (a rarity in Bali), easy parking, umbrellas and loungers for hire, and a string of small warungs for snacks.
If you’re looking for a calm-water beach in South Bali without the high prices of beach clubs, Pandawa is a winner.
When exploring these beaches, it’s important to prioritise safety. Always check tide times and ocean conditions, particularly on beaches without lifeguards. Watch out for rip currents and hazardous waters, and swim with a buddy near the shore.
Remember, Bali’s tropical climate can bring unpredictable weather. If conditions aren’t suitable for swimming at one beach, explore another part of the island. With numerous stunning beaches across The Island of the Gods, there’s always a perfect spot waiting for you to enjoy a dip!
Now that you’ve discovered some of Bali’s lesser-known swimming beaches alongside its world-famous ones, we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and explore new experiences during your holiday or honeymoon in Bali. Whether you visit serene spots like Pemuteran Beach, with its calm waters and stunning scenery, or iconic destinations like Nusa Dua, with its luxurious resorts and pristine beaches, pack your swimsuit and sunscreen to ensure you have the ultimate swimming experience in Bali!
