ROOM FOR TWO – THE ROYAL SANTRIAN LUXURY BEACH VILLAS, BALI

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas

Intro

Nusa Dua is known for its high-end resorts and beautiful stretch of coastline at the quieter end of Bali’s southern peninsula – but The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas sits in a category of its own. Just 20 private pool villas on a calm beachfront, deeply Balinese in character and designed with couples in mind. We checked in for two nights after a big, busy week in bustling Seminyak, and it was a divinely indulgent and relaxing way to finish our trip to Bali.

Overview

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas - MAIN POOL

Set across 2.5 hectares of manicured tropical gardens on Bali’s southern peninsula, The Royal Santrian is a boutique beachfront collection of just 20 private pool villas, around 20 to 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport. With 17 Deluxe Pool Villas and three Royal Pool Villas, it operates on a scale that feels closer to a private estate than a resort. The property is designed with couples firmly in mind: maximum villa occupancy is three adults, though the architecture, the atmosphere and the rhythm of daily life here are oriented entirely towards romance and rest. The beach is calm and private, the food outstanding, and the staff have a quality that only comes with genuine care.

Nusa Dua itself is quieter and more polished than Seminyak or Kuta – wide boulevards, manicured grounds, a calmer coastline. The resort offers complimentary shuttle transfers to Bali Collection and the surrounding area until around 10pm; loaner bikes are available for those who prefer to explore independently.

Look & Feel

Arrival sets the tone: at the open-air reception pavilion – marble floors, a single vivid orchid stem, a check-in desk to one side – a staff member in traditional Balinese dress ties a woven bracelet onto your wrist and presents a ceremonial tray of offering bowls.

Inside, a large traditional Balinese raksasa – a demon guardian figure draped in black-and-white poleng cloth – stands on its plinth directly ahead, the ocean framed behind it. Turn to the reception desk and two things compete for your attention: a densely carved antique Balinese door set into the pale stone wall to the left, its timber panels worked in crimson and gold, and a large contemporary canvas to the right – an explosion of yellow, blue and red around a geometric triangle. Ancient craft beside modern art.

The view from the back of the reception pulls everything together: a central stone pathway leads past a pair of seated stone guardian statues, down through an immaculate lawn, frangipani and palms, stepping down to the ocean at the far end. Canang sari offerings sit at doorsteps throughout the grounds, carved figures appear among the planting, thatched rooflines rise above the treeline. Deeply Balinese and thoroughly luxurious – the two sit together here without compromise.

Tucked within the grounds, a villa has been converted into a small spa – intimate by design, with one treatment room. I booked a Balinese massage each day of my stay; advance booking is essential, as only one treatment or couple can be accommodated at a time.

Best Room for Two

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas - DELUXE VILLA GARDEN

The Deluxe Pool Villas are stunning – around 300 square metres of private Balinese garden, each with its own pool, open-air bale pavilion and a uniquely carved entry door. But if you can stretch to a Royal Pool Villa, do. The three Royal Villas sit at the front of the property with direct ocean frontage, and it was in one of these that we spent two glorious nights. You enter through your own carved Balinese door – ours was cobalt blue, its panels worked in gold, teal and burgundy floral detail.

Inside, the bedroom is anchored by a grand four-poster king bed with white draping curtains, champagne-gold satin bedding and an ornate patterned rug underfoot. Open the curtains and the view runs straight through to the private pool and the ocean beyond. Lying in bed watching the light move across the water, with palms and frangipani between you and the sea, is very hard to leave.

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas - ROYAL VILLA OCEAN

The pool is noticeably larger than in the Deluxe villas, with a small waterfall jet at one end and a direct sightline to the beach and private cabana beyond the boundary wall. The outdoor area includes teak decking, green-striped sun loungers and a shaded bale pavilion with a navy daybed, dining table and rattan chairs. The bathroom is spa-like in scale: a freestanding Jacuzzi bath sits beside a circular porthole window looking back out to the pool and garden, alongside both an indoor rain shower and a dramatic outdoor shower set against a tall dark stacked-stone wall, open to the sky. The minibar is stocked daily and complimentary – two beers, soft drinks, sparkling water, biscuits and peanuts, replenished each day – and a coffee machine is provided.

Food & Drink

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas - ALLSPICE RESTAURANT

The food is a real highlight, ranging across a menu that moves confidently between Asian and Western cuisine. All Spice, the main beachfront restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner: Tom Yam Goong, Massaman Prawn Curry, pan-roasted snapper with lobster bisque, grilled Tasmanian salmon, a seafood platter with lobster and scallop. The Japanese section is worth noting – Wagyu Yakiniku, Chef Omakase, Tempura Udon.

On Nyepi – when the restaurant closes early and the island goes dark – the resort arranged villa dining until 7pm. I had the seafood risotto; my companion had the chocolate volcano with ginger sauce. I can confirm it is worth ordering: I had to steal a mouthful to be sure.

The Martini Bar sits beachside – gold-and-white striped umbrellas, low rattan lounge furniture, Moorish lanterns glowing amber as the afternoon light drops. Complimentary afternoon tea is served here each day: cakes, green tea, coffee. It is a natural precursor to staying on for cocktails as the beach empties. A teppanyaki pavilion overlooks the pool for something more theatrical. Breakfast is generous and flexible, served in the restaurant or delivered to the villa; the floating breakfast in the private pool is an option worth asking about on arrival.

Weddings & Vow Renewals

Bali has no shortage of beautiful wedding chapels, but The Royal Ulu Shanti is truly special. A striking glass and stone structure with a dramatic folded roof, it sits at the ocean’s edge surrounded by a still reflection pool, with an immaculate lawn stretching out before it. Intimate rather than grand, it suits couples who want something architectural and beautiful without the fanfare.

The Royal Santrian offers five distinct ceremony and reception spaces: the Azure Beach Terrace, the Ocean Garden, The Royal Infinity – a floating deck ceremony over the pool – The Royal Ulu Shanti chapel, and the Ulu Shanti Garden for larger celebrations under the open sky. The wedding coordination team handles planning end to end. For couples dreaming of a Bali wedding, The Royal Santrian offers something that larger properties rarely can: the feeling that the day is entirely yours. Boutique in scale, beautiful in setting, and with a team that knows how to make it all feel effortless – whether you’re planning an elopement for two or a celebration with everyone you love.
