For couples planning their next Bali getaway, Tanya Joslin explores a majestic five-star escape in the island’s prized Nusa Dua precinct.

Overview

The Apurva Kempinski Bali - Heroshot 2024 - Resort

Stepping into the soaring open-air lobby of The Apurva Kempinski Bali, the first thing you notice isn’t just the jaw-dropping view of the Indian Ocean. It’s the way everything — from the traditional hand-carved Gebyok partitions to the polished marble floors to the gentle breeze drifting through — works in harmony to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Kempinski Bali Lobby

Designed as a five-star homage to the Majapahit Kingdom, an era of Indonesian history known for its artistry and sophistication, there’s a sense of place woven into every corner. Textural stone walls, traditional batik accents, and intricate wood carvings create an atmosphere that feels regal but never ostentatious. An exquisite hideaway for couples keen to experience the beauty of Indonesia in every moment.

Location

Nestled in Sawangan, Nusa Dua, The Apurva Kempinski Bali is a 30-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, yet it feels wonderfully secluded from Bali’s busier areas. The resort is perched above Samabe Beach, offering uninterrupted Indian Ocean vistas. While Uluwatu Temple, Bali National Golf Course, and the Puja Mandala worship site are all within easy reach, the sheer abundance of world-class amenities here makes leaving entirely optional.

Best room for two

With 475 gorgeous rooms, suites and villas on offer, there really is something for everyone at this expansive property. But for those seeking the ultimate romantic retreat, you can’t go past the Cliff Private Pool Ocean Junior Suites. These 100-square-metre sanctuaries offer panoramic ocean or lush garden views, a private plunge pool, and an expansive terrace for intimate evenings under the stars.

Beyond the lavish furnishings and cloud-like king bed — one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in — the real luxury lies in exclusive Cliff Lounge access. Spanning the ninth and tenth floors, this private haven provides an extended breakfast service until noon, all-day free-flow refreshments, afternoon high tea, and evening cocktails with a curated selection of canapés. Good to know: the VIP treatment extends to optional personalised check-in and check-out services too.

Food & drink

Apurva Kempinski_Koral Restaurant

Two words: aquarium restaurant. A first for Bali, Koral demonstrates how the ambience is just as important as the food at The Apurva Kempinski Bali. Led by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Baptiste Natali, this aquatic dining experience offers a meticulously curated seafood menu that blends French culinary techniques with the bold, fresh flavours of Indonesia. Just don’t be surprised if your eyes keep drifting from your plate to the magical marine life beyond!

For a more relaxed vibe, Pala Rooftop Bar offers panoramic views of Bali’s coastline, complemented by a cocktail menu that rivals the beauty of the sunset. Or try the resort’s new interactive dimsum and hotpot restaurant, Bai Yun, where fresh ingredients are prepared before your eyes.

L'Atelier Restaurant Apurva Kempinksi Bali

Craving a touch of Paris in Bali? L’Atelier by Cyril Kongo delivers just that. Featuring striking graffiti-inspired décor by French artist Cyril Kongo and an extensive wine list, it’s the perfect setting for romantic evenings or indulgent nights out. Another highlight for us was barefoot dining at Reef Beach Club, where meals are savoured with the sand between your toes and a soundtrack of ocean waves.

Spa & wellness

The Apurva Spa is one of the most spectacular wellness spaces this spa junkie has ever experienced. More than just a retreat, it feels like a temple to relaxation, where ancient traditions meet modern indulgence. Inspired by the Javanese philosophy Rupasampat Wahyabiantara — where true beauty is a balance of outer and inner harmony — the spa offers everything from traditional lulur body scrubs and jamu herbal drink to chakra-balancing rituals, sound healing sessions, and guided meditation.

Entrance Apurva Spa Kempinski Bali

For my hour-and-a-half massage (the decadence!), I stepped through intricately carved wooden doors to be met by the scent of essential oils and the soothing sound of water trickling over stone. The treatment was nothing short of transformative, my therapist melting away tension with expert precision and intuitive pressure. I walked out feeling like I’d been unravelled and gently reassembled … in the best possible way!

It wasn’t until my last morning that I discovered the Fitness Centre—much to my dismay—because it’s just as spectacular as the spa. Perched high in the cliff building, it offers jaw-dropping ocean views that make even a treadmill session feel like an experience. The space is bright and open, with cardio equipment perfectly positioned to soak in the scenery, a dedicated core and mobility zone, and a private room for PT and small group training.

A well-stocked hydration and refreshment station adds to the luxury, but what really stood out was the class schedule—an enticing mix of Aerial Yoga, Anti-Gravity Yoga, Circuit Training, and more. Some are complimentary, others have a small charge, but had I known about it earlier, I might have struck the perfect balance between indulgence and movement. Next time!

Couples will love

Apurva Kempinski_Couple Watersport

The Apurva Kempinski Bali promises an unforgettable stay for any couple holidaying in Bali. But the resort is especially suited to those who have already done a bit of sightseeing and are seeking somewhere so wonderfully immersive that they never want to leave.

There is so much to enjoy within the resort itself — from the pristine beachfront and sprawling infinity pool to a private plunge pool if you opt for a suite (we highly recommend). The exclusive Cliff Lounge, excellent spa, and unique aquarium restaurant add further layers of indulgence. And make sure you leave time to investigate the wealth of activities, including an extensive menu of fitness classes and spa and wellness treatments that go beyond mere relaxation.

Our three-night stay wasn’t nearly enough time to experience it all. So, if you’re planning to venture beyond the resort, consider booking a longer stay — because once you check in, you’ll find it nearly impossible to check out.
