Nikki Ernst settles into New Farm’s delightful Miss Midgley’s: a boutique Brisbane accommodation gem, perfect for couples to check in, chill out, and soak up the charm.
Overview:
If you’re the kind of couple who loves historic buildings with a modern twist (guilty!), then Miss Midgley’s in New Farm is your perfect Brisbane base. This 1860s heritage-listed former school has been beautifully reimagined into five luxury apartments, each with its own personality, charm and generous dose of style. Think soaring ceilings, exposed brick, bespoke interiors, and plenty of space to properly relax. We checked into The Principal’s Office and, let’s just say, we didn’t want to check out. The best bit? It’s dog-friendly, has a leafy courtyard, private access to the onsite pool, and it’s all just steps from Brisbane’s best restaurants, boutiques and bars. Whether you’re in town for a romantic mini-break, a stylish staycation or just need an excuse to visit James Street (hello shopping), Miss Midgley’s is your spot.

The location:
Right in the heart of New Farm, one of Brisbane’s most loved neighbourhoods, Miss Midgley’s is perfectly placed for couples who love to explore on foot. Wander down James Street, now recognised as Australia’s premier shopping and dining precinct, where you’ll find the five top-rated restaurants in Queensland, award-winning bars, and luxe designer boutiques. You’re also close to the New Farm Cinemas, local galleries, and lush riverside walking paths. Add New Farm Park, the Powerhouse, Howard Smith Wharves and the ferry to the CBD into the mix, and you’ve got a seriously easy – and very fun – urban escape. Honestly? With so much within strolling distance, you’ll be happy to leave your car parked onsite for the duration of your stay.

Food & Drink:
While there’s no in-house dining at Miss Midgley’s, you absolutely won’t miss it – not when you’re staying in one of Brisbane’s most exciting foodie neighbourhoods. With James Street quite literally on your doorstep, couples will find no shortage of ways to satisfy every gastronomic craving, from lazy brunches to elegant dinners and everything in between. We kicked off our day with a perfectly brewed coffee (there are plenty of top-notch cafes to choose from within strolling distance) before settling in for a delicious brunch at one of the local favourites, Miss Jones. Later, we wandered up to CRU Bar & Cellar for a pre-dinner cocktail (or two), then crossed the road to Gerard’s Bistro, where a refined Mediterranean-inspired menu with Northern African influence and an effortlessly chic vibe delivered a seriously memorable night. Whether you’re craving fine dining, a stylish bar snack, or a hearty pub meal, this neighbourhood has you well covered … and all without needing to call a cab. And if a quiet night in sounds more your style, simply stock up on gourmet supplies from The Standard Market Co. / James Street Grocer, head back to your apartment and make the most of the well-equipped kitchen. We’re talking local cheeses, a bottle of wine, and your own little New Farm dinner-for-two.

Best room for two:
Each of Miss Midgley’s five self-contained apartments has its own unique personality, but The Principal’s Office really does feel like it was made with two in mind. Tucked away on the ground floor, it’s spacious, filled with natural light, and has been beautifully reimagined with a modern, functional fit-out that still manages to honour the building’s rich history (we couldn’t stop admiring the incredible 10-metre stone wall that runs the length of the apartment!). The king bedroom features a clever retractable curtain wall that brings a bit of theatre to the space (and privacy when you want it), while the bathroom is practical, with a generous shower and a separate toilet. The open-plan kitchen and living area flows effortlessly out through folding glass doors to a private, dog-friendly courtyard and sunken garden, complete with a generous deck and leafy surrounds. With a poolside position and easy indoor-outdoor living, this apartment feels more like your own inner-city retreat than a typical hotel room.

Couples will love:
The romantic mix of heritage architecture, modern luxury and location, with all the privacy and personality of your own beautifully curated New Farm pied-à-terre. It’s stylish, serene and walk-everywhere easy. The kind of place you’ll wish you booked for longer.
