The new year is almost here and, naturally, we’re thinking of all the amazing places we’d like to visit in 2019. It seems many people are, with travel booking site Webjet releasing its most-searched destinations for the year ahead. Seeking an exciting new destination for your next romantic getaway? Apparently Shanghai is where everyone wants to go.

Nicknamed the ‘Paris of the East’, the vibrant Chinese city has experienced the largest increase in searches over the past 12 months, according to Webjet data. Known for its shopping, dining and dazzling skyline, Shanghai offers plenty for luxury-lovers and couples dreaming of a city escape.

Webjet Country Manager David Galt says that discovering the destination is incredibly easy. “Australia and China have an ‘open skies’ agreement which removes restrictions on the number of flights to major cities,” says Galt. “The opening of new routes and increase airline capacity, along with interest to the destination, is likely contributing to the boom in searches.”

Also in the spotlight, New Caledonia’s Noumea took out second place. Australia’s Alice Springs, Japan’s Osaka and Sri Lanka’s Colombo complete the top five list.
