Forget the usual picnic pitfalls (we’re talking mood-killer crowds and armies of ants eyeing off your soggy baguette) and set sail on a Scandi-style picnic boat instead. Having already made a splash in Canberra and Melbourne, Danish company GoBoat’s eco-friendly electric vessels arrived on the Gold Coast last year, with Brisbane poised for an imminent launch. So on board.

You won’t need a licence, boating experience or even a crew — although there is room for eight around the timber picnic table, and your pooch is also welcome aboard. Just BYO an esky of gourmet provisions and bubbles and set sail into the sunshine (or sunset). The Yarra River awaits your exploration in Melbourne while in Canberra you can putter around landmark Lake Burley Griffin. Or enjoy gliding through the Gold Coast waterways from Sanctuary Cove, with this cute-as option “coming very soon” to the Brisbane River.

GoBoat’s picnic boats get a green tick of approval for their recycled PET bottle construction, sun canopy option, and ultra-quiet German electric motor, with the company committed to patrolling and collecting rubbish from the waterways they frequent. Nice one!

Now all that’s left to decide is, who gets to wear the captain’s hat?

Where: GoBoat Australia has locations in Canberra, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast with Brisbane set to launch soon. Prices start at $99 for an hour.

Couples will love: quality time out on the water, with the freedom to explore from a new angle
