Switzerland's scenic Oberoms hiking trail

Australian travellers are falling in love with Switzerland, with a growth in overnight visitors to the land of peaks, cheese, clocks and chocolates.

Switzerland Tourism has announced a whopping 14.1% year-on-year increase in overnight stays in 2017 from the Australian market. Apparently, Aussies love it so much, they are even staying longer, spending more time exploring and getting to know the country.

A record breaking 323,643 overnight stays last year “reflects the shift from Switzerland being traditionally a stopover destination or as part of a multi-country European itinerary to now a stand-alone holiday destination with strong repeat visitor numbers," says Mark Wettstein, Director of Switzerland Tourism AU & NZ.

It seems that Aussies are favouring Switzerland's mountains and lesser-known towns and villages over the big cities during their travels. Switzerland's railways are an easy way to explore the scenic nation, with the Swiss Travel Passes also proving to be increasingly popular with travellers.
