Romance, history and comfort in Switzerland

There’s no question that Switzerland holds a long-standing and solid reputation for its world-class hospitality and services. From budget accommodation options to five-star luxuries, your stay in Switzerland will always inevitably be of a very high standard.

When it comes to choosing where to stay, we think the country’s historic hotels are most appropriate as they add to the quintessential Swiss experience. Here are some of the character-filled places we know you will love.

Zurich

The vibrant city life this financial capital can only be balanced out with some R&R at the Marktgasse Hotel, located in the heart of the city’s charming Old Town. This 600-year-old building features 39 rooms – boutique, just the way we like it. What we really love about it is its embodiment of the spirit of the city via its refined mix of historic heritage elements and contemporary design. Each room features its very own theme and beautiful custom-made furniture. When you stay, you’ll also enjoy free access to the Hamam Wellness Centre nearby. Bonus!

Lucerne

Home to the iconic Chapel Bridge, Lucerne is undoubtedly one of the most photographed cities in the country. We suggest you pair your visit there with a stay at the Hotel Wilden Mann. As one of the seven historic houses in the Old Town, it was first recorded as a restaurant back in 1517. Located just a hop and a skip away from the train station and Chapel Bridge, the hotel is also famous for its restaurants, Burgerstrube and Sauvage (14 Gault Millau points). Their famous beef stroganoff and chateaubriand dishes are must-haves!

Basel

One of the most important cruise hubs in Europe, Basel is Switzerland’s city of art and architecture. Needless to say, its artistic appeal is also reflected in the hotels around the city. We especially drawn to Hotel Krafft Basel, not only for its picturesque location on the banks of the River Rhine, but its newly renovated rooms and its incorporation of Swiss Typenmöbel furniture from the 1950s. Since opening in 1873, the hotel has welcomed a host of famous artists including poet, Hermann Hesse.

Montreux

Ooh-la-la! The French-speaking town of Montreux on the shored of Lake Geneva is well known for its romantic landscape, food & wine and relaxed pace. Famed also for its long running annual Jazz Festival, Montreux sits on one end of the scenic GoldenPass Line. For your next visit, we recommend staying at the Hotel Massôn. A charming boutique hotel featuring 33 rooms, it was originally a winegrower’s house, which went on to become the town’s oldest hotel. Built in 1829, the sheer charm of this establishment has attracted the likes of aristocrats, historians, writers, painters and philosophers over the years.

Brienz

Boasting a magnificent backdrop of a waterfall, mountains and lake, the well-preserved GrandHotel Giessbach located in Brienz, near Interlaken, was once a palace hotel. Set on 22 hectares of beautifully manicured gardens and parkland with a natural swimming pool, its 70 luxuriously appointed rooms feature Belle Epoque charms. Also, to add to the charm, you arrive via a private boat and funicular ride. How exclusive!

Wengen

As we know, the Jungfrau Region is simply unbeatable for its panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and hiking trails. When you visit next, we suggest staying at the Hotel Bellevue des Alpes located at Kleine Scheidegg. Established in 1840, the cosy hotel offers 100 beds and takes guests back through time. Famous among celebrities, mountaineers and skiers, the hotel was a filming location for "The Eiger Sanction" starring Clint Eastwood and "North Face" starring Benno Furmann.
