We’re kind of in love with Hawaii here at H4C – how could you not be?
For couples planning a getaway to this tropical paradise, there will no doubt be plenty of sparks flying, but our 10 romantic experiences in Hawaii are sure to add a couple of ideas to your list!
1. Take a mule ride through Kalaupapa National Park – Molokai
Hawaii’s national parks really are like nowhere else on earth, and while there are plenty of ways to see them, it’s hard to beat a mule ride – who could resist those sweet faces? You’ll certainly be thankful for their sturdiness as you descend Kalaupapa National Park’s dramatic cliffs – measuring more than 500 metres they’re the highest sea cliffs in the world.
Take in unbelievable views of Molokai – also known as the ‘Friendly Island’ – as you meander around the picturesque trail and learn of the island’s history and folklore.
2. Visit Puu Pehe (Sweetheart Rock) – Lanai
With a name like Sweetheart Rock, this natural landmark is sure to give you both romantic vibes.
The rock (also known as Puu Pehe) is a picture-perfect spot, surrounded by brilliant shades of blue. The story of the rock is sweet but tragic: according to Hawaiian legend, a young warrior named Makakehau was so taken by the beauty of a princess named Pehe that whenever he laid eyes upon her he would become misty-eyed. After tying the knot with Pehe, taking his new wife to Lanai and hiding her in a sea cave, Makakehau was gathering supplies when a storm brewed and drowned Pehe. Wailing to the gods to help him climb the steep rock island, the warrior buried his wife and jumped from the summit to his death.
Okay, so it’s not exactly the happiest of endings, but Puu Pehe is blessed with spectacular views and is the perfect picnic spot.
3. Catch a wave
You’re in Hawaii: of course you’re going to go surfing (or at least attempt it). For experienced surfers, make like the pros and head to Maui’s North Shore, while beginners will find calmer waves at famous Waikiki Beach on the island of O’ahu, as well as a range of surf schools. Blasting surf rock on the journey over is non-negotiable.

5. Be mystified by volcanoes
Admittedly, we instantly thought of Disney Pixar’s Lava when writing this. Emerging from the sea millions of years ago by the brute force of volcanoes, Hawaii is one of the very few destinations across the globe where you can still see an active volcano.
A trekking tour is an exhilarating way to see these majestic formations up close, but for an experience that’s truly unforgettable, take to the skies with one of the many helicopter tour groups on the islands.

6. Stroll through Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park – Kauai
You’re in Hawaii – you’re going to want to soak up as much sunshine, warm breezes and picturesque views as possible. You won’t be disappointed when you visit the truly enchanting Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park.
Dotted with giant palms, this emerald oasis stretches over an incredible 97 hectares and is the perfect day-trip destination. Also home to a waterfall, lagoon and an impressive collection of sculptures that tell of Hawaii’s historical figures, the gardens will make you feel completely relaxed within moments of visiting.

7. Food, glorious food
Hawaii is known as one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world, resulting in equally diverse food.
You have to try Hawaiian favourites such as fresh ahi poke, kalua pork and laulau, but for a glamorous night out book yourselves a table at Vintage Cave, Chef Mavro, Alan Wong’s Restaurant, Nobu Waikiki or any of the Roy’s restaurants throughout Hawaii.
Enjoying a shaved ice treat by the beach is inevitable, while the much-loved (by the locals) Spam delicacies on offer are not for the faint of heart… or stomach.
8. Drive along Highway 137 – Island of Hawai’i
Hire yourselves a car and cruise along (windows down) the coastal Highway 137 for views of volcanically heated hot ponds and glowing streams of lava flowing to the sea.
Hawaii’s answer to The Great Ocean Road and Route 66, this stretch of road also passes orchards and an array of accommodation options – just make a detour and book a room if inspiration takes you.
9. Dance under the stars at Kani Ka Pila Grille at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort – Oahu
Tourist-friendly cultural events at resorts may have a bit of a bad reputation, but Kani Ka Pila Grille at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort you’ll experience a night of authentic dance performances and Hawaii’s most legendary musicians.
New local talent and island artists of international renown can be seen here nightly, so get dolled up and make your way over for a night of sheer romance.
10. Visit the last remaining original tiki bar, La Mariana Sailing Club
We couldn’t talk about romantic experiences in Hawaii without mentioning this little gem. Whether or not you’re as taken with all things kitsch as we are, a night at La Mariana Sailing Club is one you won’t soon forget – unless you order a zombie, which we highly recommend.
The last original Tiki bar, Le Mariana is tucked away in an unsuspecting industrial area and serves all the same concoctions from the heyday of tiki bars. Established in 1957, it’s a Hawaiian institution and it’d be simply rude not to order yourself something strong and delicious, and enjoy the atmosphere in all its retro glory. We highly recommend you order a zombie… did we say that already?
