We’ve been singing Sri Lanka’s praises for a while now and it seems we’re not the only ones that are loving the sensational destination. Known for its incredible wildlife, gorgeous beaches and spectacular mountains, Sri Lanka took out the top spot in Lonely Planet’s annual Best in Travel list. If you ask us, it’s easy to see why.

Following 26 years of civil war, the destination has won over travellers, with tourist visits increasing from 447,890 in 2009 to 2.1 million in 2017. Lonely Planet author Ethan Gelber says a number of amazing factors make Sri Lanka a must-visit spot. “Already notable to intrepid travellers for its mix of religions and cultures, its timeless temples, its rich and accessible wildlife, its growing surf scene and its people who defy all odds by their welcome and friendliness after decades of civil conflict, this is a country revived,” says Gelber in the Best of Travel 2019 book.

Following in second and third place respectively, Germany and Zimbabwe also made the list. Panama, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Indonesia, Belarus, Sao Tome and Principe, and Belize rounded out the top ten.
