Many Brisbane residents – this writer included – say the city comes into its own in winter and early spring. The humidity, thunderclaps and downpours of summer are gone, replaced by mild, sunny days and clear, star-filled nights.

The months of May to September are ideal for a short, warm, romantic break in the Queensland capital.

Start by treating yourselves to a few nights at the Emporium Hotel in Fortitude Valley – it is streets ahead of other hotels in Brisbane for design and panache. The husband-and-wife team that owns the place has created a modern design gem with a hot cocktail bar sporting an eclectic mix of furniture and chandeliers, and a hip rooftop deck and lap-pool. The rooms are sleek and sexy with black, white and golden-brown colour schemes and frangipani-motif panels. The Emporium Suites are the go: each has a vast bathroom, large spa bath and private balcony.

Take your time and explore the coast and hinterland on this holiday road trip between Sydney and Byron Bay …

For many of us, a drive along the New South Wales north coast is a blur lost in the holiday rush of getting from A to B. But get off the highway and onto the back roads and you’ll soon find there’s much more than roadhouses and petrol stations to see along the way. Think beautiful beaches; wild World Heritage-listed national parks and rainforest; lush, fertile farmland valleys laced with wide fish-filled rivers and an array of interesting villages and regional towns hiding some of the state’s best kept holiday secrets.
