Make like Meghan and Harry and discover the romance of Fraser Island

A cherished Queensland destination for summer sojourns and loved-up weekends away, Fraser Island is now capturing the world's attention thanks to royal newlyweds Meghan and Harry. Adding this tropical wonderland to their 2018 Australian tour, the two have really got us daydreaming of a short break. And no wonder – with extraordinary scenery and a blissfully laid-back atmosphere, the island is a paradise for couples.

Want to holiday like the young royals? Make like Harry and Meghan and tick off these romantic experiences for a dreamy Fraser Island escape.

The Champagne PoolsFor the beach-loving couple

Just looking to get your fill of surf and sand? You're in the right place. With a collection of postcard-ready beaches, Fraser Island has plenty to offer couples seeking that 'endless summer' vibe. A real must-visit for its sparkling waters and soft sands, the aptly named Sunset Beach is undeniably romantic. Wile away the hours sunbathing or taking a refreshing dip before the skies fade to a captivating palette of pink and orange – heaven.

McKenzie Lake

Another Fraser Island icon, the Champagne Pools are just as enchanting as the name suggests. Formed by volcanic rock, these tranquil Jacuzzi-like pools on the island's eastern side receive the bubbly foam of the nearby ocean's waves (hence the name), creating a spectacular setting for chilling out. Want to top off a romantic day at the beach? Pick up a hamper from Eurong Beach Resort and share a bottle of prosecco on the golden sands of 75 Mile Beach – perfect for enjoying a little barefoot luxury. And it's not technically a beach, but Lake McKenzie is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. Home to turquoise fresh waters, pristine white silica sand and paperbark tree forests surrounds, this picturesque spot actually offers some of the best snorkelling on the island – look out for inquisitive fish and turtles!

Kingfisher Bay ResortFor the luxury-lovers

For a glamorous getaway, start things off right with a stay at the beachfront eco-friendly Kingfisher Bay Resort. Tucked away in native bushland, the resort's villas are fabulously private and boast all the essentials for an incredible escape. Our tip? If travelling with friends, book yourselves one of the two- or three-bedroom spa villas with their own outdoor spa.

Spot incredible views when you go on a scenic flight over Fraser Island

Whether you're staying elsewhere or claiming Kingfisher Bay Resort as your home-away-from-home, treat yourselves to the Tastes of Seabelle degustation experience at the resort's signature restaurant. Celebrating the uniquely delicious flavours of Australian bush foods, Seabelle's sous chefs expertly pair dishes like Tea Tree-smoked kangaroo with sensational Australian wines. Or, for something a little more exhilarating, take to the skies with Air Fraser Island. Taking in sigh-inducing views of the island, its lakes, beaches, bushland and marine life, the group's scenic flights are a truly amazing way to see Fraser's best sights.

Explore the island's famous shipwrecksFor the adventure-seekers

Blessed with magnificent scenery, Fraser Island is like a natural playground for thrill-seekers. From exploring the world's only rainforest grown on-sand to snorkelling and whale-spotting, there's plenty to do here. Easily one of the island's most famous sights, the shipwrecked S.S. Maheno near The Pinnacles is a treat for those who love to mix adventure with history (Indiana Jones fans, we're looking at you). After running aground over 110 years ago, the weathered ocean liner is now a bona fide landmark and draws curious visitors to explore its remains.

Don't miss a 4WD adventure while in this amazing destination

If you're wanting some white-knuckle action, hire a 4WD or join one of the many local tour groups to discover Fraser Island's natural wonders. Travelling through seemingly-endless hardwood forests, expansive sand blow deserts, lush rainforest and past crystal-clear freshwater lakes, off-road adventures like these will have you marvelling at the island's sheer beauty (with the wind in your hair, of course). Or, slow things down but keep the excitement alive when you hit Eli Creek on Fraser Island's eastern beach. Pouring up to four million litres of clear freshwater into the ocean every hour, it's a beloved spot for swimming and floating from one end of the creek to the beach – go with the flow, baby!
