An exciting new addition to Brisbane’s growing hotel scene, Art Series Hotels’ latest Queensland offering doesn’t disappoint. Named after Archibald Prize-winning Australian artist Vincent Fantauzzo, The Fantauzzo has all the makings for an amazing short break, city escape or weekend away.
Featuring three original artworks and 500 giclée prints of the artist’s most recognised works, the six-storey luxury boutique hotel is a sophisticated haven in Brisbane’s trendy Howard Smith Wharves precinct. Time for a little indulgence? Pack something smart, leave your stresses behind and check into The Fantauzzo…
Room for Two
It has to be said – The Fantauzzo is cool. Like, straight-out-of-a-design-magazine cool. Following suit, the hotel’s 166 luxury suites beautifully meld modern refinement with a surprisingly homey feel.
Whether you opt for one of their comfortable cliff-hugging Studio Suites or go all-out with a stay in one of the spacious Deluxe Riverview Balcony Suites, you can expect touches like cloud-like Art Series Signature King Size Beds, Nespresso machines and Smart TVs with access to a special art channel. It’s the little things, though, that make each of The Fantauzzo’s abodes so welcoming; things like books of local and international artists’ work on the desk, and, of course, the impressive Vincent Fantauzzo artworks on the walls.
Perfect for couples escaping for a short break or romantic weekend away, our Studio Riverview Suite looked out to one of the best views of Brisbane that we’ve seen. Drawing back the thick, dark-hued curtains, we couldn’t help but say ‘Oh, wow‘ when the floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the snaking riverbend and its imposing skyline – romantics, take note. Completing the ‘glamorous city escape’ idyll, a generous glass-encased ensuite and a contemporary colour palette of matte black, natural timbers, concrete, emerald green, gold and grey made us feel like A-listers escaping for an evening on the town. And that’s certainly okay with us!
Looking to really spoil yourselves? While each of The Fantauzzo’s accommodation options promise a fabulous stay, its Deluxe Riverview Balcony Suite is really something special. Boasting a separate lounge and dining area, and a large ready-for-entertaining balcony with expansive river views, it’s an excellent choice for luxury-lovers and those celebrating a special occasion.
You’re in one of Brisbane’s hottest new dining precincts (MasterChef actually filmed an episode for its latest season at the Howard Smith Wharves in February), so you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to finding somewhere romantic for dinner.
Literally steps from The Fantauzzo, brewery-slash-restaurant Felons Brewing Co. is great for fuss-free fare, a buzzy atmosphere and refreshing brews. Nearby, new local favourites Greca and ARC Dining & Wine Bar pair their breathtaking outlooks with exquisite fine dining. After dinner, saunter into one of the city’s most Insta-ready haunts, Mr Percival’s. A retro-inspired hexagonal bar set over the water, it’s the place to go for late-night bites, infectious beats and an Aperol Spritz (or three). There are also a slew of other Howard Smith Wharves eateries set to open throughout the year, so watch this space!
Before you explore the precinct, though, kick off your romantic getaway with drinks at the Fantauzzo’s rooftop hangout, Fiume (translating to ‘river’ in Italian) Bar. Set below the humbling Story Bridge and adjacent to the hotel’s sleek infinity pool, it’s fantastic for watching the sun set and the skyline glitter while sipping a cocktail. Holiday vibes? Tick.
Located on the Fantauzzo’s ground floor, Polpetta (translation: meatball) celebrates flavour-packed, rustic Italian cuisine – think comforting share plates, pastas and risotto. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it’s a blissfully relaxed spot with plush booth seats and a laid-back al fresco area.
Opting to soak up the sunshine outside and watch the world go by (as you do), we treat ourselves to a mix of early-morning classics and gourmet delights from Polpetta’s breakfast menu. Sure to win over traditionalists, the Free-range soft-poached eggs with Bronte Beechwood smoked bacon, toasted sourdough and avocado is hearty enough to prepare you for the day ahead. Those feeling like something a little lighter, though, will love the sashimi-like House-cured salmon with lemon crème fraiche, soft-poached free-range eggs, peperonata and fennel pollen. However big your appetite, settle in, order something delicious and while away the time sipping quality St Dreux coffee to get your morning started.
Only a short stroll along the boardwalk, cycle or drive from Brisbane’s CBD, The Fantauzzo is right on the city’s doorstep. Hit the nearby high-end boutiques for a little retail therapy, wander hand-in-hand through the lush City Botanic Gardens, scale the Story Bridge to get the heart pumping, see a show at South Bank’s QPAC or discover the Fortitude Valley’s (10 minutes’ drive away) galleries and kidult-friendly hangouts for a sensational escape.
Want to venture out a little further? Hire one of The Fantauzzo’s Smart cars and check out Brisbane’s incredible surrounds. There are also Lekker bicycles and scooters available if you fancy doing a bit of sight-seeing. Not sure where to begin or what to see first? The hotel’s friendly concierge team are only too happy to point you in the right direction.
Couples will love
Don’t leave without chilling out by the hotel’s rooftop infinity-pool-with-a-view – there are enough sun-loungers and umbrellas here to fulfil your ‘poolside martinis’ fantasies. Art-lovers, be sure to also take a complimentary art tour of the hotel. The Fantauzzo is reminiscent of an art gallery and exploring its mood-lit hallways with a knowledgeable guide is a real treat. Keep an eye out for portraits of familiar faces like Heath Ledger, Guy Pierce, Kimbra, Elizabeth Debicki and (the artist’s wife) Asher Keddie.
Other than its hard-to-beat location and upscale amenities, The Fantauzzo’s attention-to-detail and inviting atmosphere are what really makes it stand out. From the genuine smiles on staff members’ faces to the quirky design features (like golden paint-drip details on the suites’ doors), there’s plenty here to enchant guests. Sumptuous city stays with all the lovely trimmings? The Fantauzzo has them down to a fine art.
