When you think of an über-glam island escape Bora Bora or the Maldives might spring to mind, but for something equally luxurious there’s a tropical hideaway much closer to home. Say hello to Fiji’s Likuliku Lagoon Resort.
The first, and still the only, Fijian resort to feature over-water bures, this five-star, adults-only oasis offers privacy and all-inclusive luxury just a short speedboat ride or helicopter flight from the main island of Viti Levu.
Ranging from (not so) standard garden bures to deluxe beachfront options, Likuliku showcases authentic Fijian style. Eighteen stylish beachfront bures dot the sandy coastline – each with their own deck, daybed and plunge pool – while a snaking boardwalk takes you to 10 above-water bures with in-floor glass portals to an aquarium and coral reef below.
When it comes to things to do, snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and exploring the local village make for an unforgettable stay, as does an indulgent couple’s massage at the resort’s Tatadra Spa (translating to ‘House of Dreams’).
One thing you simply can’t miss is one of Likuliku’s island-hopping trips. Be warned: departure time is at 7am, but a trip to the postcard- ready Monuriki Island is well worth the early start. Film buffs, prepare to do your best ‘Wilson!’ cry, as this is where they shot Cast Away with Tom Hanks.
Scenery aside, if there’s one thing that separates Likuliku from the rest, it’s the food. Led by Australian executive chef Shane Watson, the resort’s open-air restaurant features an ever-changing menu using the very best produce. Make sure you try the signature poached mud crab omelette with chilli and papaya relish for breakfast.
Likuliku has cemented its place in the world of luxury island getaways. With luxe accommodation and a list of unique, must-do experiences, it’s easy to see why.
