Woodend
This charming country town is home to Hanging Rock, where the iconic Australian movie was filmed, and makes an ideal base for exploring the picturesque cellar doors of the Macedon Ranges. Allow at least half a day to explore ‘The Rock’ as it’s affectionately known then pick up a winery map and head for the hills. Here you’ll find more kangaroos than people and some excellent wineries.
If you’re after a casual afternoon, head to the Holgate Brewhouse, a restored 19th century hotel with not one but five roaring fireplaces. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of the excellent local red. Or if you or your partner are avid golfers, fit in a visit to the picturesque Woodend Golf Club.
