Launching on 1 June 2025, Kalkudah Beach House joins the Teardrop Hotels collection as a five-room beachside escape for travellers looking for space, calm and authenticity. The property sits within a 25-acre coconut estate, just steps from Kalkudah Bay’s soft sands and still waters.

The house was originally built in the 1970s as a family getaway and was later abandoned during the country’s 26-year civil war. It also endured the 2004 tsunami, which devastated much of the coastline. While the building fell into disrepair, its Dutch-style windows and original structure survived. After two decades of careful restoration, it has been reimagined as a luxurious yet understated retreat.

Guests can stay in one of three rooms in the restored Main House or opt for the two-bedroom Palm Villa, a modern addition with floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping beach views. The estate can be booked in full for a completely private stay. Every detail has been considered, from solar power and a full water purification system to a 22-metre pool set into the gardens.

Food is a highlight. Seafood comes straight from the local fishermen who cast their nets just offshore. Expect grilled reef fish, fresh crab, seasonal salads and fragrant Sri Lankan curries, all served in open-air settings. Afternoon tea is offered daily in the pavilion, and a social hour with complimentary drinks eases the transition into evening.

Kalkudah is a gateway to some of the east coast’s most beautiful natural and cultural experiences. Guests can snorkel nearby coral reefs, explore historic Polonnaruwa, or simply relax in one of the least developed parts of the island. The dry season runs from April to October, offering ideal conditions for swimming, snorkelling and sunset walks.

Early Bird Offer:

Bookings made before 15 September 2025 receive 10 to 20 percent off selected dates through 2026. Rates start from USD 270 per night for two, including breakfast, afternoon tea, and drinks from 5 to 6 pm.
