There's more to accommodation than just over-water bungalows in Tahiti

There's more than just over-water bungalows in Tahiti

"Immerse yourself in true Tahitian culture by staying in a pension (guesthouse) or with a local family. This is a great and cost-effective way to experience the local cultures; you can find hidden gems around the islands, and learn about traditions and handicrafts. Fabulous options include Maupiti Residence or Pension Paparara on the north side of Fakarava, or Pension Ariitere on the north west side of Huahine. There’s also Cocoperle Lodge on the almost-untouched atoll, Ahe, which offers pensions and thatched-roof bungalows crafted entirely out of local materials."

An incredible way to see the sights

"Want a super-fun and affordable way to explore Tahiti's islands? Hire yourselves a scooter or bike from one of the many local vendors in the area and see some of Tahiti's most beautiful scenery in an action-packed adventure!"

Tahiti is amazing for hiking and camping

A once-in-a-lifetime camping experience

"If you’re an adventure-seeking couple, consider camping on the islands. It's a spectacular way to experience the beauty and nature of the islands on a smaller budget. Bring your camping equipment or buy locally when you arrive and settle straight in for an unforgettable holiday experience. On the north side of Rangiroa, check out the family-fun campsite of Nanua Camping. Or, try Camping Hiva Plage on Huahine. Larger islands like Moorea and Bora Bora both have beautiful camping spots too."

Top tip for hotel and resort stays

"If you do stay somewhere glamorous, ask about all-inclusive and half-board packages. You won't have to fork out for food (pun intended) during your stay and you'll be able to pay this expense before you hop on the plane – more time to save up!"

Head for the hills

"Or for something a little more action-packed, hike your way around the main island of Tahiti, with its many peaks that offer breathtaking views. There's an array of brilliant spots in Tahiti, ranging from the very easy to the challenging."

Try some of Tahiti's delicious local cuisine and enjoy a romantic picnic

Romantic picnics

"There are plenty of amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to be found in Tahiti that won't cost you a fortune. Pack a picnic of local goodies and set off on a day-trip, and discover the largest atoll of The Islands of Tahiti, Rangiroa, for a seriously romantic dining experience. Known for its breathtaking diving spots, you'll be stopped in your tracks by the abundance of colour in this huge lagoon."

Laid-back dining

"Eat at one of the many food trucks dotted around Papeete’s Place Vai’ete before you leave The Islands of Tahiti for your final fill of poisson cru and French crêpes. With a vast range of delicacies to try, pick your favourites, take a seat at one of the picnic tables and catch a live music performance. Perfect"
