Phuket

Phuket is one of the country's largest islands, and a hundred destinations in one. Regardless of whether you're seeking serenity, indulgence, romance or just the simple pleasures of island life, you'll find it on a Phuket honeymoon or romantic getaway.

Thailand's most popular (and developed) island still offers an array of secret shores where you can have the sand and the scenery to yourselves.

Every taste and budget is well catered for, from backpacker dorms to five-star luxury retreats, and while some areas on this 540-square-kilometre island are a little overdeveloped, you'll still find your ideal beach getaway. Many older resorts have been renovated to meet the demands of today's savvy travellers and there's plenty of swanky new resorts opening every year.

Several Phuket regions and beaches are especially popular with honeymooners and couples on a romantic getaway. These include the chic enclaves of Surin and Kamala, where you'll find some of the island’s most luxurious resorts, sweeping bays, beach clubs and restaurants. Or if you're looking for action, lively Patong is just a 10-minute drive from Kamala. Although it isn’t everybody’s idea of fun (think girly bars, shopping malls stuffed with tourists and the famous/infamous Patong Beach) it will certainly keep you entertained!

Love resort hopping? Check out the nature-inspired, fully-integrated area of Laguna, home to myriad large resorts with their facilities all connected by courtesy bus.

Though you might feel an instant affinity with your poolside sun lounger, don't miss Phuket's beaches. And bring your snorkel.

Fringing the northwest coastline, the 11-kilometre Mai Khao beach – Phuket's longest swathe of sand – is popular yet still fairly untouched due to its location within Sirinath National Park.

Ao Yon Beach's palm-brushed white sand, shallow waters and oyster-growing rafts a few hundred metres out to sea are postcard perfect. Siam Beach's natural sheltered pool and nearby snorkelling opportunities are well worth braving the steep descent down the stairs from the Kata viewpoint.

Craving a little quiet time? Banana Beach, so-called for its distinctive crescent-shaped bay, might be a bit of a trek from the road, but hard to beat for a peaceful escape. Almond tree-shaded Ao Sane Beach's craggy granite boulders mean that it's both visually arresting and a great place to snorkel, while teeny north-facing Hua Beach, framed by granite outcrops at either end, proves that good things really do come in small packages.

Need to Know:

DO take a boat trip to one of the outer islands. From the famous James Bond Island to beautiful Racha Yai, there is a tropical paradise waiting to be discovered.

DON’T be put off by Patong – it's fun to go in and shop, or experience the colourful nightlife. Some couples prefer to stay at or near Patong as there are luxury hotels to envelop you in peace and serenity while keeping you close to the action.

COUPLES WILL LOVE the value of the luxury hotels and resorts here. Thailand does luxury like few others. From hillside private villas to all-encompassing sprawling five-star hotels, Phuket offers some of the most divine escapes in all of Asia.
