Chiang Mai is known by locals as “the rose of the north” and has become a popular romantic getaway and honeymoon destination for couples looking the ultimate combination of adventure, culture and relaxation.
From trekking through the lush jungles just outside the city to strolling through the markets, stalls and shops behind the ancient city wall, Tapae Gate, Chiang Mai embodies the Kingdom's cultural heritage.
The ancient walled city was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom and today this historic Old Town will give you a feel for the real Thailand. Chiang Mai boasts a huge number of beautiful wats (temples) which is why you'll see many monks wandering throughout the city.
Slow down the pace and visit the Doi Suthep Buddhist temple on the mountain, or join the locals and tourists who hit the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar every evening from 5-11pm. Browse literally thousands of stalls selling Thai handicrafts, jewellery, clothing and everything in between.
The delicious northern Thai cuisine is characteristic of the region, whilst the weather is often cooler than the southern cities and islands. Be sure to book a cooking class here!
Need to Know:
DO spend a few hours doing a walking tour of the many temples around the Old City. Some hotels offer this, but it is easy enough to get a map and do it yourself.
DON’T fall for the trap of riding elephants here. Many well-intentioned tourists visit with dreams of riding an elephant, and this writer was once one of them, but a visit to Elephant Nature Park changed all that. You can help look after the elephants at Elephant Nature Park, feed and bathe them, and get close while helping the plight of these gracious creatures. Once you understand what these amazing animals go through to be domesticated, you’ll want to spread the word, too.
COUPLES WILL LOVE the laid-back pace of beautiful Chiang Mai. The city is called the Rose of the North for a reason. It is also cooler than down south, so a lovely end to any Thailand holiday or honeymoon.
