What to do in Melbourne (Visions of Victoria)

So you've decided to embark upon a weekend couples' retreat to Melbourne - good on you, you're going to love it!

Now's the time to get down to the nitty gritty about what you're going to see and do while you're there. Here's one itinerary for 48 hours in the city that might help you organise your romance and adventures.

Friday night

It's Friday night and the perfect time for you to get stunning views of the city with a visit up to the Eureka Skydeck 88. Travel up 88 storeys to the top of the tower and the highest viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere and gaze out hand-in-hand over the twinkling cityscape.

If you're both feeling brave, you can even head out on "the Edge," which is a switchable glass cube that slides out from the building with you safely nestled inside - it sure is a thrill!

After the awe-inspiring views you can head home to your luxury accommodation and settle in for the night. Blissful.

Saturday morning

Grab your coffee and breakfast from somewhere like Switchboard Cafe or Hopetoun Tea Rooms - some of the much-loved and trendy cafes in the city. Then you'll have all the energy you need to head to the Old Melbourne Gaol and soak in as much convict history as you can. This structure was built in the 1800s and, while a tad eerie, is a fascinating place to visit. Ned Kelly himself was held here! Tour the spooky cells and giggle nervously along with your loved one!

Saturday afternoon

It's time to head to Federation Square, one of the most buzzing centres of Melbourne. This public gathering place often holds festivals and events so before you make your journey, see if there's anything exciting on!

Hang out in the piazza or even come along with a packed picnic - you'll see plenty of other couples doing the same.

Besides the space to simply relax and enjoy, there are bars, restaurants, cafes and galleries to soak in. Check out the art at the Ian Potter Centre, visit the Australian Centre for the Moving Image or shop til you drop for souvenirs and memorabilia.

Saturday evening

Stick around Federation Square - after all, you're sure to have worked up an appetite. Sink your teeth into a juicy burger at the Burger Bar or enjoy a romantic Italian feast at Il Pomodoro Italian.

Be sure to grab a sweet treat at Movenpick ice cream afterwards for the perfect end to a fun and romantic day!

After a taste of the hustle and bustle of city life on Friday and Saturday, Sunday is all about relaxing and maybe even getting back to nature.

Does a spa day sound up your alley? Why not head to Salus day Spa, which is just over an hour from central Melbourne by car. Along the way you'll be treated to beautiful scenic views of regional Melbourne and Victoria. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by stunning surrounds and sumptuous treatments. Try a hot mineral water spa, a deep tissue massage, body wrap, facial and much, much more. The natural environment and the treatments are stunning, so you're bound to have a blissful day together.

If penguin-spotting is more your kind of activity, you can make a trip to Phillip Island, approximately a one and a half to two hour drive from Melbourne. Here you can see these adorable creatures on the 'Penguin Parade' - when they waddle up from the sea to the shore in the evening. Talk about cute! It's the perfect end to a romantic weekend getaway. While you can't get close enough to the penguins to cuddle them, at least you can snuggle right up to your loved one!

So as you can see, a weekend in Melbourne can be full of fun, delicious food and lots of romantic opportunities. Enjoy!
