Planning a summer weekend getaway to the Snowy Mountains? Check out our guide as you plan 48 hours in The Snowies with your loved one.
Australia's Snowy Mountains are an ideal getaway for nature lovers in any season. This breathtaking natural attraction boasts sharp peaks, rolling hills, forested areas, alpine lakes and some of the most stunning scenery Down Under.
The area surrounding 'The Snowies', as they are colloquially known, is peppered with luxury resorts, natural reserves, hiking trails, ski hills, scenic chair lift rides and more. Are you and your loved one the outdoorsy types? You'll want to take a guided tour through Kosciuszko National Park, one of the most awe-inspiring sites in Australia. More of a fine dining-type couple? Relax on a balcony with your sweetheart while enjoying amazing scenery and sipping on Australia's local wines.
Not sure exactly what your itinerary should involve? No worries! Even if you're only visiting The Snowies for a weekend, you can have an incredible trip that includes a little bit of everything. We've even put together a 48-hour couple's plan so you can experience the best of what the Snowy Mountains have to offer:
For a quick weekend getaway to The Snowies, you'll want to hang your hat close to the village of Thredbo. Thredbo offers a variety of dining options and provides easy access to Kosciuszko National Park making it an ideal base. Although there is accommodation options aplenty, there is definitely a stand out choice in the region… Lake Crackenback Resort is only 15 minutes from both Perisher and Thredbo and offers a variety of studios, chalets and apartments perfect for a romantic weekend getaway.
Start your Saturday morning off right with a healthy, protein-packed breakfast at Central Road. Situated on Thredbo's Village Square, this casual eatery is the perfect little cafe for an invigorating breakfast date for two. The friendly wait staff, cute decor and warm atmosphere will make for the perfect start to your day.
Try the smashed eggs, served with sheep's feta, potatoes and mushrooms on sourdough bread, or try the breakfast burrito with jalapeno salsa, bacon, poached eggs and hashbrowns. You might want a healthy, energy-sustaining choice (you're about to head out into the great outdoors, after all!), so consider the granola with honey yoghurt and berry compote.
Saturday late morning/afternoon
You simply shouldn't travel to the snowy mountains without taking some time to actually experience them! The staff members at Kosciuszko National Park offer a variety of bushwalking activities for people of all fitness levels. You should make sure to talk to your local tour guides to determine which walks align with your physical capabilities, but to make things easier, we've laid out two options for you:
Guided Dead Horse Gap: If you prefer to walk mostly downhill and avoid strenuous walking, the Guided Dead Horse Gap is the perfect tour for you. Though the walk is mostly downhill, you won't miss out on sweeping views. Your group will take the Kosciuszko chair lift up to the top of the mountain before winding your way down to Dead Horse Gap. You'll spot a variety of flora and fauna along the way, including beautiful Australian wildflowers, twisted snow gums and a plethora of other native plants. You might even be able to spot a platypus in the river! This walk meets at 9:45 a.m. and costs $44 per adult.
Mt. Kosciuszko Day Walk: This 5.5-hour walk is a bit more strenuous than the Guided Dead Horse Gap option. You and your group will traverse up and around Mt. Kosciuszko, discovering local vegetation and geological features along the way. Plant highlights include buttercups, snow gums, marigolds, mountain roses and silver snow daisies. You'll wind along the old road as you learn about Aboriginal ties to the region. The best part? Once you reach the summit, you'll receive a Souvenir Certificate. Mission accomplished!
You'll probably be feeling a bit worn out from your day of exploration, so treat yourself to a fine dining meal at Bernti's Grill. With a full wine list and an upscale atmosphere, Bernti's is a great option for a romantic dinner for two. The restaurant sources from only the finest local ingredients - split a plate of oysters, savour a dish of prawn and serrano jamon, or devour the braised pork belly.
After perhaps a morning session at the Lake Crackenback Spa (come on, you deserve this after your effort walking yesterday!), spend a relaxing last morning atop Mt. Kosciuszko enjoying a warm coffee and delightful breakfast. Eagles Nest Restaurant is located on the mountain's summit, so simply catch the chair lift up to the top to take in one last view of the stunning scenery. Enjoy a fresh scone with jam and cream as you savour some coffee and take in the stunning view.
And, after this fabulous weekend in the Snowy Mountains, you should be returning to daily life feeling refreshed and energised.
