Best foodie weekend away – Barossa Valley, South Australia

A short drive from Adelaide, the Barossa Valley has a rich food culture and producers that make wonderful cheese, pastries, bread, olive oil and chocolate. The Barossa Valley is also South Australia’s top wine region, with more than 80 cellar doors and 150 wineries. A good place to start a weekend getaway is the Barossa Small Winemakers Centre in historic Château Tanunda, while Seppeltsfield Road has a row of wineries and is home to Maggie Beer’s Pheasant Farm.

Best spa weekend away – Palm Cove, Queensland

Relax and be pampered in Palm Cove, Queensland. The sleepy seaside town is known as Australia’s spa capital for good reason. Day spas and resort spas in Palm Cove are located along a two-kilometre strip, with spa menus offering a range of treatments, from therapeutic to relaxation and holistic healings. There are palatial Roman-style spas, Russian banyas and Indigenous-inspired therapies. The strip also has a great selection of cafés and restaurants.

Best beach weekend away – Byron Bay, New South Wales

If you’re looking for a fashionable yet laid-back seaside getaway for couples, Byron Bay fits the bill. The coastal resort town has some of Australia’s best beaches, including the north-facing Watego’s, Tallow Beach and Whites Beach. But away from the beaches there are plenty of other things for couples to do, including browsing through art galleries, craft shops and boutiques. The setting is stunning and there’s a great choice of luxury accommodation suitable for a romantic weekend away, such as The Villas of Byron.

Best winery weekend away – Northeast Tasmania

Northeast Tasmania may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a weekend among the vines. But this picturesque region, just a short drive from Launceston, is actually home to some of the world’s best sparkling wines outside of Champagne. Bay of Fires Winesproduced a wine that won a Gold Medal at the London International Wine Show, while Jansz Tasmania produces fine sparkling wine.

Best adventure weekend away – Exmouth, Western Australia

Swimming with whale sharks in the middle of the Indian Ocean is an adventure that’s sure to get the adrenalin racing. Although whale sharks are harmless, it’s quite an experience to swim with huge creatures as long as 12 metres. Whale shark season is between April and July in Exmouth, and from May to July you’ll get the chance to see manta rays and humpback whales too.
