Ever heard of ‘retro-plush’? See Melbourne’s intoxicating new Ovolo South Yarra, which will throw open its designer doors on 8 April 2021. Think disco details, retro glamour, and pop art accents with a location that will land you in the heart of the city’s cultural hub of South Yarra.
The art deco hotel is home to 123 rooms, from micro studios to Rockstar Suites named after the era’s most iconic, lyrical lovers. The ever-playful brand’s signature ‘Perks’ are also in play when you book direct, including complimentary breakfast and sundowner drinks, midnight minibar treats, super-speedy WiFi, and a free Loot Bag (we do love a Loot Bag).
Designed with long-term Ovolo collaborators, award-winning designers Luchetti Krelle, the hotel mashes a creative and colourful mix of mod and ‘retro futurism’ with collabs with local and international artists such as Mr Brainwash, Punk Me Tender, and Australian artist Ben Tankard.
The food offering is equally exciting with renowned Melbourne chefs Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters, Smith & Daughters Deli) and Ian Curley (French Saloon, Kirk’s Wine Bar), heading up Lona Misa. This innovative vegan bar and kitchen promises “a rebellious renaissance from root to stem” designed to tempt even the most committed carnivore.
Wanna boogie? Step into the hotel entry where a brutalism-inspired, six-tonne concrete reception desk (that’s the weight of two elephants) and central ‘fireplace’ with bright orange flue set the scene. Then bask in Australia’s largest lightwell, visible from the lobby and hotel rooms, which showcases a digital art display: a throwback to the golden era of 8-bit arcade games, and the simplicity of a lower resolution world.
Pack your platform heels for this one.
