Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay offers a lively program of local and international shows and captivating art exhibitions. Located waterside at Marina Bay, the performing arts centre has a Concert Hall, Theatre and Outdoor Theatre, which serve up everything from jivey jazz, classical orchestra and contemporary dance to die-hard rock, authentic cultural festivals and intriguing puppet shows. Offering around 3,000 performances a year you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice and sure to find something whatever your taste. From time to time you can even snavel up a romance package which includes two tickets to a show, a special three-course dinner at Restaurant Labyrinth, intermission drinks at the Foyer bar, and a couple of souvenir programmes.
The theatre’s stunning architecture is a real design marvel – which is reason alone to visit. Featuring two eye-catching domes covered in ‘spiky’ aluminium sunshades that are designed to let light in and keep heat out – the design that has even been featured on Singapore’s five-cent coins! While the original design was based on a ‘lantern in the park’ concept it evolved to be likened to tropical fruit, bug’s eyes and even a giant microphone, before becoming known as the ‘durian’.
