On 14 July it will be 150 years since the first people stood on the summit of what is probably the most photographed mountain in the world, the Matterhorn.
To celebrate, loads of events will take place throughout July and August. A highlight will be the nightly illumination of the mountain (from 13 July), with numerous lamps lighting the route of the first successful ascent.
Other sesquicentennial celebration events include a seven-gun salute on 14 July in honour of the seven men who first reached the summit, the opening of the renovated Hörnli hut (the starting point for climbing the Matterhorn), a food and drink festival and “The Matterhorn Story” – a play about the ascent, performed in the open-air with the Matterhorn as a backdrop. Other summer events in Zermatt range from gastronomy to golf, spectacular fireworks, tough marathons and the world-class Zermatt Festival of classical music in September.
