Camping trips are rarely stress-free, but in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, you won’t have to worry about wet weather or earth so solid you’d need a drill to get your tent pegs to stay.

Here, worries are a little larger: bumping into hippos out for a midnight munch or encountering a big cat on the wooden staircases leading up each tree. Tents are pitched on wooden platforms wedged between branches, away from the dangerous stride of the elephants that wander the unfenced camp below. Of course, the tents aren’t out of reach for tree climbers, but the fear of unwanted visitors provides some perfect snuggling opportunities.
