Live a luxurious life with a stay in one of these best-designed hotels.

There's nothing quite like a beautifully designed hotel to enhance your stay in a city, and sometimes your accommodation can even be a destination in itself. That's certainly the case for these beautiful lodgings, all of which have drawn acclaim for their stunning design.

1. The Bulgari Hotel, London

Nestled right amongst one of London's most upmarket neighbourhoods, Knightsbridge, the Bulgari Hotel took out the 2013 title for Architecture of the Year: Newbuild Hotel in the European Hotel Design Awards.

It's no wonder, thanks to its beautiful marble and silver finishes and standout features such as the Italian-influenced colonnaded swimming pool. The complex simply exudes style and luxury.

2. Hotel Valentinerhof, St Valentin

This architectural marvel is in the heart of Italy's alpine region. It blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings with its smart use of design, local materials and a refreshing simplicity.

Visit the wood, stone and glass built hotel, with rooms that incorporate plenty of natural light and views of the surroundings. The saunas, spas, and pools are also simple, stylish and closely in line with the local environment.

3. Mandarin Oriental, Paris

Simplicity wins out again at this sophisticated hotel right amongst the fashionable streets of Paris. The decor is elegant and understated, with a few dramatic touches.

Take the expansive spa, for example, with its suites and vitality pool. Then there's the serene garden, and absolutely breath-taking Royale Orientale Suite Terrace with its views of Parisian rooftops. Add this hotel to your bucket list.

4. Superbude St Pauli, Hamburg

Less about grandeur and more about pop culture, individual flair and creativity, this German gem comes with personality plus.

Its rooms, suites and common areas are full of colour, and many of the walls are decorated with the words of writers, journalists and bloggers, plus cool vintage-inspired photos and artwork. This is one to watch - it won the European Hotel Design Of The Year Award in 2012.

5. The Alpina, Gstaad

This Swiss treasure took out the The European Hotel Design of The Year Award in 2013 and it's no surprise why.

Brimming with luxury yet remaining authentic to its environment, this 5 star wonder uses stone, wood carving and Swiss leatherwork to wow its patrons. Rooms and suites come with awe-inspiring mountain views, and some with those special touches like roaring wood fireplaces. Its Six Senses Spa is also a beauty, with various themed areas such as the Floatation, Cave and Oriental Rooms.
