Habitat for Humanity

Here at Holidays for Couples we're big fans of Voluntourism  - the act of having a holiday and giving back at the same time - and we've just caught wind of a Habitat for Humanity rebuild happening in far west Nepal.

Nepal is an absolutely stunning location for a holiday, the lively locals, historic culture, and amazing surrounds make for the perfect combination.

Despite this amazing holiday spot, visitors aren't always aware that slavery was only abolished a little over ten years ago. Sadly, some of the effects of slavery have been long reaching and some people are still lacking basic facilities like clean water and sanitation.

This is where Habitat for Humanity Australia comes in. A project that has recently been launched that aims to improve these living conditions for over 500 households in the far west of Nepal.

Here's where you come in. Habitat for Humanity Australia are reaching out to thirty people to be the first to take part in the project. These thirty people will help raise funds for the project and take the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Nepal to build the first homes. These six homes will be built from November 30 to 6 December 2013.

“Giving people the tools and access to safe decent shelter is so important, and with this project Habitat will provide livelihood and water and sanitation training, as well as tube wells, latrines and maintenance training. Funds raised for this project will also go into providing low-interest, recyclable loans to families hoping to build their own homes or repair those damaged by annual flooding.” says Sophie Levins from Habitat for Humanity, Global Village.

Those who want to volunteer but are lacking the know-how of building need not be concerned. All ages and all levels of experience are welcome, there will be local labourors on sight to provide knowledge and guidance.

This would be a great project for couples looking to get away from it all AND make a difference in the world.
