Sometimes you and your loved one just want to get away, but you don't have much holiday leave or an endless budget, either. Luckily, there are plenty of locations for delightful weekend getaways in Australia, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery in our own backyard. One stunning place to go is the sunny township of Port Douglas, in tropical Queensland. Here are some reasons why it's such a great place for couples, and some tips on how to spend your time there.

First and foremost, Port Douglas is simply a beautiful destination. It only takes about an hour to drive there from Cairns airport, which has regular flights to and from main Australian cities. There are plenty of shuttles and transfers available, so you don't need to rely on having a car.

Once you arrive, you'll see why Port Douglas has a reputation for attracting the rich and the famous. Many high-profile figures have holidayed here, including Bill Clinton, Tom Hanks and Mick Jagger. Its beach is one of its biggest drawcards, with white sand stretching on for miles and warm, clear water.

During peak season, there will be a safe 'between the flags' swimming area, which is watched over by surf lifesavers. This is usually at the end of the beach closest to the Port Douglas township.

Set aside plenty of time to wander the quaint streets of the village. With its abundance of palm trees and peach-coloured sidewalk, it's a veritable tropical paradise.

There are plenty of cafes and ice-cream shops to help you cool off, and many bars and restaurants for you to enjoy come nightfall.

In addition, there are a great number of both boutique fashion outlets and popular clothing chains, so you can get your shopping fix.

There are also plenty of shops selling local fare, including hand-crafted jewellery or woodwork, and other trinkets.

Considering Port Douglas' roll-call of celebrity clientele, it's a no-brainer that there is plenty of luxury accommodation on offer.

A number of world-class resorts are peppered throughout the region, many with beach-front access. From large, lagoon-style pools to five star restaurants and spa facilities, you won't want for anything at one of these establishments.

Enjoy a room overlooking gardens or the pool, or indulge in a private villa for the ultimate getaway.

Most luxury resorts also have shuttles or other transport options to the town centre, so you always have quick and easy access to everything the village has to offer.

Depending on your budget, you might want to consider travelling to Port Douglas outside of peak-season. Often you can get some really great deals during this time if you can live with the slightly less predictable weather. In addition, it can be nice to experience a resort and the town while they are quiet and without crowds.

Port Douglas also happens to be close to some really great activities if you decide you ever want to leave the town and resort!

Being so close to the Great Barrier Reef, it's easy to embark on a tour and experience snorkelling, swimming and diving out at the beautiful coral reefs.

There are also many breathtaking islands nearby, such as the Whitsundays. Here you'll find Whitehaven Beach, which is one of the world's most-photographed beaches, so why not stop by since you're so close?

Then there's the Daintree Rainforest. This is part of a national park, and it's no wonder why, considering this is the world's oldest surviving rainforest.

The rainforest contains a huge variety of life, from trees to flowers to animals, and is also a site of significant Aboriginal heritage. Take a walk or a guided tour, or experience one of the more adventurous activities on offer there, such as ziplining.

Even if Port Douglas isn’t on your radar, now is a fantastic time to enjoy a short break to Queensland and enjoy the gorgeous temperatures and sun-filled days before winter comes along. Visit our gallery of gorgeous escapes for two and plan your perfect Queensland honeymoon or short break today!
