There are so many reasons why Bali is one of the most popular destinations in Asia, especially for Australian couples planning their dream honeymoon or romantic getaway. Bali is a tropical island with lots of beaches, excellent shopping, a captivating culture and wonderful food – the perfect combination for a couples' escape. But above all, a holiday or honeymoon in Bali is easy on the pocket and offers good value for money – you can book an incredibly luxurious hotel or villa, often for less than you would pay for comparable luxury in many parts of the world.

Here are our suggestions on where to shop, dine and stay in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu.

North of Kuta, Legian is popular with beach-goers who love to party. Legian’s nightclubs and restaurants are some of the best on the island. Jalan Legian (which connects Kuta and Seminyak) is where you’ll find good music and a party vibe.

Within walking distance from Legian Beach, Sun Island Hotel & Spa has a lovely poolside restaurant with a sunken bar while White Rose is set in lush tropical gardens. The latter is within walking distance from Bali’s well-known night clubs, such as Ground Zero and Poppies Lane 2. Another hotel in Legian, Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa is regarded as a classic Balinese hotel with modern facilities, right on the beach.

Seminyak is a fashionable and stylish area with luxury boutiques and upmarket cafés. Plus, it's a good spot if you’re a surfer or just want to relax on one of Bali's quintessential beach locations.

Seminyak is also the spot to check into a luxury villa and chill out. Most resorts can organise activities such as Balinese cultural demonstrations, bicycling and village tours.

For an utterly romantic stay, try Amadea Resort & Villas. The resort has two- and four-bedroom villas, each with a private plunge pool set in lush gardens. Or, you might treat yourselves to a Pool Villas or Royal Pavilion Villas at Samaya Seminyak Bali. The villas are either on the beach or set in a village courtyard setting, with tropical gardens and lap pool.

Kuta is Bali’s main beach town and a hive of activity. A few days in Kuta offers lots of holiday options, from having fun on the beach (you’ll find plenty of locals willing to braid your hair, paint your nails or give you a massage for a few dollars) to shopping and tasting Indonesian cuisine.

You could easily fill up a suitcase (or two) shopping in Kuta. Options range from buying local crafts and trinkets at the Kuta Art Market to browsing in comfort in modern air-conditioned shopping malls. Kuta Beachwalk is a well-designed mall with ponds and a central atrium.

If shopping in Bali is your main goal, Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel is a convenient spot to stay as the hotel is next to the Discovery Shopping Mall on South Kuta Beach. The hotel has 318 rooms, suites and villas and it’s a sprawling resort with seven restaurants and bars, an inviting pool area and even a helipad – a telltale sign of absolute opulence. Sun Island Hotel Kuta is another luxury accommodation option perfect for finding a romantic room for two in a strategic location within walking distance of Kuta's big attractions, as well as being five minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

About half an hour’s drive from Kuta but a world away from the throngs of party goers is Canggu, a sleepy region that offers good surfing and scenic vistas of paddy fields. Canggu is the place to go to get away from the crowds. And fortunately, it’s not too far away from the action either.

Canggu’s black sand beaches are not the best for swimming but offer exciting challenges to surfers. Batu Bolong Beach is the most popular and you can buy fresh seafood at Nelayan Beach (Fisherman Beach), perfect for relaxing on the sand with your loved one.

Canggu is a hot spot for villa accommodation. One of the newest is Ametis Villa, a luxury villa resort with a home-away-from-home atmosphere, 13 one-bedroom villas and a three-bedroom Grand Villa with its own swimming pool.
