We've said it before but I'll say it again. We love Macau – for so many reasons. Its historical charm, fusion of cultures (which translates deliciously in to the cuisine) and glitzy entertainment precincts are all reasons as to why it's high on our radar for romantic holiday destinations. But, did you know, the rest of the world loves Macau too? So much so that 10 years ago it was labelled a UNESCO World Heritage listed site.

Over the past decade, the historic hub in the centre of Macau has been lovingly maintained, so now is the time to enjoy a romantic getaway or honeymoon in this gorgeous part of the world.

According to Helen Wong, general manager of the Macau Government Tourist Office in Australia and New Zealand, Macau is living testimony of how western and eastern cultures came together. The recognition of Macau as a UNESCO site showcases how important central Macau was for the west to enter China over 400 years ago. A relic of Portugal's golden age in Asia, Macau's distinct European architecture is a reminder of early Sino-Portugese relations dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

Today, the best way to see Macau's historic sights is to take a stroll through the city centre on one of the Macau Government Tourist Office's suggested self-guided walks. Here you will discover fascinating historic streetscapes and popular piazzas, ruins, temples, churches, the Casa Garden, 17th century Guia Fortress and more.

The self guided walking tours can be downloaded from the Macau Government Tourist Office's website, straight to your smartphone.
