See and do
For an adventurous day out, there are a number of wonderful wildlife cruises throughout the Darwin region, but for something that'll really give you an adrenalin kick – have a look at Jumping Crocodile Cruises. Huge saltwater crocs will rise out of the water and snatch the bait offered to them by cruise guests. After that you'll probably need a sundowner, best enjoyed at one of Darwin's waterfront restaurants near to the CBD. Next, take a wander through the Mindil Beach Sunset Market (held every Thursday and Sunday). Operating since the late 1980s, the market combines over 100 stalls of handmade goodies, music, fashion and the main attraction: food from across the globe.
Everyone should experience the Katherine Gorge at some point in their life; it is like a window into another world. Couples can take a helicopter flight over the gorge, scoping its immensity from above, or, a river cruise through it, gazing up at the gorge's towering cliffs. In Katherine you can find your own private oasis: a little watering hole with sky blue water in Nitmiluk National Park, or soak away stress in the soothing surrounds of Katherine's hot springs. Throughout the gorge, discover ancient Indigenous rock art from the Jawoyn and Wardaman people who were the first inhabitants of the area.
Tip: Avoid Katherine during the wet season – you might not be able to leave due to flooding!
The Alice is a central point for a lot of the Northern Territory's natural wonders: Uluru, Devil's Marbles, King's Canyon, Rainbow Valley and more. You can also take a camel ride throughout the outback to see the sights in a very different way. Once you've exhausted yourselves doing the touristy things, or have a bit of downtime, the township will give you a taste of Alice culture. A favourite of the locals, Todd Mall has a heap of trendy cafes and restaurants.
In Darwin there is an international airport, and in Alice Springs a domestic airport where QANTAS flies to and from the major cities in Australia. There are also a number of small aircraft options, depending on where you're going. For longer trips, you may want to rent a four-wheel drive to do a bit of exploring, but we recommend this only for experts or those not planning to go off the beaten track as there is the potential danger of getting lost in remote areas.
After a day of adventuring, enjoy some poolside downtime at Cicada Lodge
Our pick for accommodation is the Cicada Lodge, located in Nitmiluk National Park overlooking the Katherine River. The Cicada Lodge offers couples an experience of the true Northern Territory: ancient terrains and cultures. The rooms are beautifully appointed with Bvlgari amenities so although you may be out experiencing the wild during the day, you will recline in luxury (and air-conditioning!) by night.
