Set on the shores of what is widely regarded as the World’s Most Beautiful Lagoon, Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort, the Cook Islands’ only private-island resort, has been named among Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best for 2026. Tripadvisor’s highest distinction places this intimate adults-only retreat among the top 1% of hotels worldwide, based entirely on genuine guest reviews. Just 33 bungalows, including the Cook Islands’ only Overwater Bungalows, share its secluded private island.
Every journey to the Cook Islands begins on Rarotonga, an island with no traffic lights, no parking meters, no chain restaurants or hotels, and where nothing is built higher than a coconut palm. From there, it is a 50-minute flight to Aitutaki, followed by a two-minute ferry ride across the Full Moon Channel to the resort’s own private island.

You are met from your flight with a fragrant flower lei and, by the time the ferry reaches Motu Akitua, a cool towel, freshly opened coconut and warm island welcome are waiting. Return Aitutaki Airport to resort transfers are included, as is a full cooked breakfast buffet each morning.
The island

The resort occupies its own private island, a 27-acre motu called Akitua, devoted entirely to just 33 well-spaced bungalows and the resort’s intimate facilities. Reserved exclusively for in-house guests aged 16 and over, the island remains peaceful and private throughout the day.

Guests tend to mention the serenity first: the lagoonfront swimming pool, private decks, hammocks beneath the palms and the sandy path out to Kuriri Point, where the views stretch across Aitutaki’s seemingly endless 50 shades of blue.
Much of what you can do here is included. The complimentary activities programme may feature snorkelling and snorkelling lessons, fish feeding, island drumming and hula dancing, ukulele sessions, learning to tie a pareu or weave a palm frond, lei making, coconut-husking demonstrations, crab races and guided island walks.

Your own set of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkelling gear, sunloungers, bicycles and beach towels come with your bungalow. Take the ferry across and explore Aitutaki’s main island by bicycle, visit Arutanga township and its cafés, or experience the soaring harmonies of Sunday morning gospel singing in a village church.
And then there is the lagoon itself. Head out on a famous Aitutaki Lagoon Cruise to enjoy off-boat snorkelling and a BBQ lunch, or paddle across impossibly neon-turquoise water to a small deserted offshore island, all to yourself. Snorkel from the island’s shores along the Full Moon Channel, or do nothing much at all, except watch the colours change with the passing South Seas sun.
The Overwater Bungalows

There are only seven Overwater Bungalows in the Cook Islands, and all seven are here.

Open the doors to the lagoon spread out magnificently before you. Steps from your private deck lead straight into its warm, clear water, so you can be swimming before breakfast without ever leaving your bungalow. There is even an outdoor shower on the lower deck for rinsing off after a morning dip in the lagoon.

Prefer to stay on land? The charming Polynesian-style beachfront bungalows are wonderfully enticing, positioned on the sand amongst the palms, with the lagoon just steps away.
Evenings

Depending on the evening, dinner might mean an Island Night celebration or a table at the edge of the Infinity Pool, where you can feast on island-inspired dishes and fresh organic fruits and vegetables from the resort’s own garden as the sun slips below the horizon.

For an anniversary, honeymoon, birthday or proposal, couples can arrange an intimate four-course private dinner in the exclusive Kuriri Point Gazebo, followed by stargazing beneath Aitutaki’s vast South Pacific sky.
The menu draws on fresh fish and local produce, but it is the warmth of the people that guests remember just as vividly as the food. Across review after review, the resort’s team is praised for creating the easy, heartfelt hospitality for which the Cook Islands are renowned.
Loved by Australians

Australians have been coming here for years. Getaway host Catriona Rowntree chose Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort for her honeymoon with husband James, and has spoken often of the enduring place Aitutaki holds in her heart.
When the five teams on Channel Nine’s Travel Guides gave the Cook Islands a perfect five out of five, it marked the first clean sweep in the programme’s history.
Rarotonga, for a few nights or a wedding
Because every couple travels through Rarotonga, it is easy to bookend an Aitutaki escape with a few nights at one of the resort’s two sister properties on Aroa Beach.
Sanctuary Rarotonga – on the beach (Adults Only) is reserved for guests aged 16 and over: peaceful, intimate and set directly beside beautiful Aroa Lagoon.
Next door, The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium is the family-and-couples all-rounder, and the sister resort that knows weddings inside out, with its own wedding planner and ceremonies beside the stretch of water locals call the Lagoon of Love.
Together, they create a beautifully simple destination-wedding combination: marry and celebrate with your family and friends on Rarotonga, then slip away to Aitutaki, just the two of you, for your heavenly honeymoon.
The Cook Islands are captivating throughout the year, with Frangipani Season (December to February) especially in demand by romantics for the profusion of tropical blooms and island fruits across Rarotonga and Aitutaki. Imagine celebrating Valentine’s Day in the heart of the South Seas.
