Girraween Environmental Lodge

Friday evening

Get your Granite Belt getaway off to the right start and check into somewhere beautifully secluded. There are many fabulous options spread across the region – from cosy cabins to lovely B&Bs.

A stand-out option for couples seeking a private escape, Wyerba’s Girraween Environmental Lodge (three hours’ drive from Brisbane) boasts charming self-contained chalets with spectacular bushland surrounds. With all the mod-cons, incredible views and a real tranquil atmosphere, it’ll make you feel as if you’ve left the rest of the world behind (you won’t even get any phone, internet or television coverage here).

For a fantastic first night, pick up some goodies from the local providores on your way to your accommodation and share an intimate dinner at your home-away-from-home. A little wine, something tasty, a picturesque view – sounds like a wonderful night in to us!

Girraween National Park

You really can’t come to the Granite Belt without visiting one of its most beloved attractions – Girraween National Park. A place of extraordinary natural beauty (expect amazing wildlife and landscapes carpeted in blooming wildflowers), it’s home to huge granite boulders, open forests and peaceful rock pools.

The main thing to do here is hit the walking tracks. For a leisurely (yet still exciting) experience, explore the 280-metre Wyerba Walk (roughly 15 minutes). Taking you past scenic Bald Rock Creek and through enchanting bushland, it’s terrific for couples. Consider yourselves adventure-seekers? Perfect for more experienced hikers, The Pyramid walk (3.6 kilometres) features a steep climb up an exposed rock face. The view at the top is well worth the effort though, looking out over the park.

Our Place Wine & Espresso Bar

Saturday evening

After a day spent getting active (even if slightly), treat yourselves to an indulgent dinner out. If you’re near Tenterfield, taste delicious cuisine at Our Place Wine & Espresso Bar. With a warm atmosphere, impressive wine list and an enticing menu, it’s great for sampling the local produce.

Based more towards Stanthorpe? Pull up a chair on the deck of Banca Ridge Winery’s Varias Restaurant. Celebrating the best local flavours, this acclaimed spot is loved for its mouthwatering seasonal cuisine and delightful views.

Granite Belt Brewery

The Granite Belt is known for its cellar doors, so weaving your way between wineries is a bit of a must-do. A cherished local spot, Ballandean Estate is Queensland’s oldest family-owned and -operated winery – in other words, they know what they’re doing here. Pop in and enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting, order a share platter and wander through the vines for a marvellous getaway. Also worth checking out while in the area, Golden Grove Estate and Girraween Estate both produce excellent wines.

Looking for somewhere to stop in for lunch? Make your way to Ballandean’s Hidden Creek Winery Cafe Vineyard. With a wonderful a la carte menu, it’s also where you can pick up a picnic basket for two (complete with picnic rug) and find a shady spot on the lawn.

Another top spot for lunch, Stanthorpe’s Granite Belt Brewery will win over brew-lovers. Claim a table at its Homestead Restaurant and pair the brewery’s refreshing craft beers with something simple and tasty – the Charcuterie Platter and Rib Fillet Steak Burger are sure to be a hit.

Want more? Don’t miss cheese-sampling at Stanthorpe Cheese (its Jersey Girls Cafe is another choice option for lunch) or head out early and find gourmet goodies to bring home at Stanthorpe’s weekly Market in the Mountains.
