Friday evening

A stand-out option for couples seeking a private escape, Wyerba’s Girraween Environmental Lodge (three hours’ drive from Brisbane) boasts charming self-contained chalets with spectacular bushland surrounds. You really can’t come to the Granite Belt without visiting one of its most beloved attractions – Girraween National Park. A place of extraordinary natural beauty (expect amazing wildlife and landscapes carpeted in blooming wildflowers), it’s home to huge granite boulders, open forests and peaceful rock pools.

The main thing to do here is hit the walking tracks. For a leisurely (yet still exciting) experience, explore the 280-metre Wyerba Walk (roughly 15 minutes). Taking you past scenic Bald Rock Creek and through enchanting bushland, it’s terrific for couples. Consider yourselves adventure-seekers? Perfect for more experienced hikers, The Pyramid walk (3.6 kilometres) features a steep climb up an exposed rock face. The view at the top is well worth the effort though, looking out over the park.

Saturday evening

After a day spent getting active (even if slightly), treat yourselves to an indulgent dinner out. If you’re near Tenterfield, taste delicious cuisine at Stonefruit. With a warm atmosphere, impressive wine list and an enticing menu, it’s great for sampling the local produce.

Based more towards Stanthorpe? Pull up a chair on the deck of Banca Ridge Winery’s Varias Restaurant. Celebrating the best local flavours, this acclaimed spot is loved for its mouthwatering seasonal cuisine and delightful views.

Sunday

The Granite Belt is known for its cellar doors, so weaving your way between wineries is a bit of a must-do. A cherished local spot, Ballandean Estate is Queensland’s oldest family-owned and -operated winery – in other words, they know what they’re doing here. Pop in and enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting, order a share platter and wander through the vines for a marvellous getaway. Also worth checking out while in the area, Golden Grove Estate and Girraween Estate both produce excellent wines.

Looking for somewhere to stop in for lunch? Make your way to Ballandean’s Hidden Creek Winery Cafe Vineyard. With a wonderful a la carte menu, it’s also where you can pick up a picnic basket for two (complete with picnic rug) and find a shady spot on the lawn.

Another top spot for lunch, Stanthorpe’s Granite Belt Brewery will win over brew-lovers. Claim a table at its Homestead Restaurant and pair the brewery’s refreshing craft beers with something simple and tasty – the Charcuterie Platter and Rib Fillet Steak Burger are sure to be a hit.
