Spain ranks as top spot for 2017

Back in the 1950s, international tourist numbers totalled around 25 million. In 2016, the number was 1.2 billion. And what’s the destination that’s stood out as the place to visit in 2017? According to the The World Economic Forum, which recently released its annual Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, Spain is the safest, cleanest, and most affordable destination for tourists.

Spain scored high on air transport, tourism services, cultural resources (factors like museums, stately homes and popular attractions) and business travel. Rounding out the WEF’s top 10 tourist destinations are: France, Germany, Japan, the UK, USA, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland.

North America and Europe have generally dominated travel markets, but this may not be the case for much longer. By 2030 most of the growth in international travel will come from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, which will enable further growth and job opportunities in these regions.

Based on the fastest-growing for leisure-travel spending, India, Angola, Uganda, Brunei, Thailand, China, Myanmar, Oman, Mozambique and Vietnam are the next best thing, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Meanwhile, what are the top destinations in the world right now, according to the travelling public? TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards have ranked in order: Bali, London, Paris, Rome, New York City, Crete, Barcelona, Siem Reap (Cambodia), Prague and Phuket.
