If you and your sweetheart are looking for the perfect weekend getaway, have we got the location for you. Spending 48 hours in Byron Bay, about two hours out of Brisbane, will have the two of you rekindling your love in an utterly romantic oceanside town.

This dreamy destination is begging to be explored, with its laid-back vibe and unparalleled scenery. Best of all, while you can spend some time visiting the nearby coastal and inland towns that call the Northern Rivers home (think hippy-esque Bangalow, chic Lennox Head, and quaint Alstonville), Byron has plenty to offer couples on a romantic short break.

So check out what we recommend for a memorable 48 hours in this gorgeous location.

Friday night

Byron has a completely different romantic vibe to Brisbane, so take a gentle stroll around the town to familiarise yourself with its charms. You're on a beach holiday, so we recommend fish and chips for dinner – though at Fishmongers Café, it's not your standard greasy fare! These gourmet feasts have been described as the best in Byron; speaking from personal experience, we're inclined to agree.

A local institution is on your dessert menu – In The Pink, on Jonson Street. With a variety of mouthwatering ice cream and gelato flavours (our favourite? The Ferrero Rocher – absolutely divine!), you're utterly spoiled for choice. Pick a favourite or two, then wander back to the luxury accommodation of your choice, lulled to sleep by the gently crashing waves practically on your doorstep. Bliss.

Saturday morning

You've gotten to know Byron on land, so now it's time to see it from new heights. Start your morning off with a romantic hot air ballooning experience and see the sunrise as you take to the skies during your one-hour flight. Cruising over lush green hinterland and dramatic coastal views, you'll definitely be pleased you took the time out for this – this region is home to absolutely stunning views. Top the experience off with a romantic champagne breakfast for two and make some truly cherished memories.

After your flight, pay a visit to Wollumbin National Park, formerly known as Mount Warning National Park. Locals call this experience a must-do, with many a hiker climbing this dormant volcano and seeing the natural sights all around. At over 1000m above sea level, the views are completely worth the climb. And don't despair if there's a bit of rain (the Northern Rivers is known for its fickle weather!) – it just makes the views so much more romantically picturesque.

Stretch your legs, explore the volcanic crater and try to spot some of the abundant wildlife wandering around the rainforest.

Saturday afternoon

Head back to Byron Bay to relax shoreside – you can't go to Byron and not visit the beach! Spend some time at Main Beach, lazing around on the white sand and splashing around in the calm waters. There are beautiful mountain views on offer here, too. For a more quiet beach (Main Beach is generally packed), check out Belongil Beach. In addition to the great waves and incredible views, there's also a rare colony of Little Terns that can be viewed.

For a quick snack, Byron has restaurants and cafés aplently for couples to enjoy. Check out Byron Beach Cafe on Clarkes Beach, Lawson Street. With delicious menus catering for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert you can't go wrong here with sumptuous food and friendly service – perfect for a romantic feed! You can also grab a takeaway bite and enjoy it on the beach. Bring along a blanket and snuggle up for a late afternoon snack.

Saturday night

Take off your shoes and go for a barefoot walk along one of Byron Bay's quiet beaches, enjoying the stars that emerge so brilliantly at night. Thanks to Byron's clear skies and minimal air pollution, you'll see millions – it's definitely a romantic experience to remember!

Pack a picnic and spend a romantic night beneath the stars, or follow your walk up with a visit to one of the town's trendy bars, such as the Byron Bay Brewery at 1 Skinners Shoot Road. This establishment serves up award winning beers and provides a romantic, laid-back atmosphere to enjoy them in. Decorated by artists, and frequented by travellers and friendly locals, you can kick back here and make use of the beer garden, pool tables, television screens and regular live musical acts.

Sunday morning

Now it's time for an iconic Byron experience – the lighthouse and headland! Wake up with the morning sun and make your way to the beautiful Cape Byron Headland Reserve, home to the lighthouse and light-keepers cottages, which were built in 1901.

Take in views of rugged sea cliffs, vast and dramatic beaches and thriving coastal plant life. There are plenty of walking tracks around the area if you are keen to explore it in greater detail. Make sure to take a snapshot of you and your honey standing on the edge of the world – this point is the most eastern point in Australia, and the sheer drop to the sea below is simply beautiful.

You can also learn plenty about the Aboriginal heritage of the area, which is of particular significance to the local Bundjalung people of Byron Bay.

Sunday afternoon

Wind down with a trip to the locally loved Earth & Sea pizza and pasta shop. This has been a Byron Bay institution since 1976, with countless delicious meals catering for any and all dietary requirements. Sink your teeth into a Manuel's Mexican or Satay Chicken pizza, or grab an El Supremo or Hot Lips to takeaway and enjoy another romantic picnic on the beach.

Follow it up with a cheesecake, tiramisu or hot chocolate before making your way back home – but we have a feeling you'll be planning your trip back to romantic Byron Bay in no time.
