  • South Coast Wonderland: a Romantic NSW Getaway

South Coast Wonderland: a Romantic NSW Getaway

The drive to the Shoalhaven region on the south coast of NSW is a picturesque two hours from the traffic snarled streets of suburban Sydney, through the rugged Royal National Park (the second oldest in the world), past the small beach-side townships of the Illawarra district, and further south through undulating green hills, sweeping valleys and lush grazing paddocks. The scenery reminds me of postcards I brought back from the UK years ago except for the red tin roofs of the homesteads we pass; serene scenes of country life so different to the skyscrapers and dense traffic of our city life. Garlanded with the ever-present blue haze of the Great Dividing Range, it’s the sort of luminescent countryside that announces you’ve arrived somewhere special.

  • Port Douglas Escape

    Port Douglas Escape

August to October is an ideal time to take a short break in Tropical North Queensland. We recently made the easy trip to Port Douglas for a long weekend, where we revelled in the sunshine and laid-back vibe, and the chills from a 'southern-state' winter were a million miles away.

It seemed like everyone we met was either on holiday, sailing in or sailing away, or just another long timer who passed through town years back, and never left! I can see why they stayed … Port Douglas has all the charm of a sleepy fishing village and the sophistication of a world-class destination in one delightful package. It boasts a really relaxed lifestyle, with great accommodation options ranging from budget backpackers to five-star luxury and boutique hotels. Plus you'll find palm-fringed beaches, fabulous restaurants, great pubs (with live music and cane toad races putting you firmly in North Queensland territory!), and an abundance of stunning natural natural attractions including three of Australia's most prized assets right on its doorstep – the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, Mossman Gorge and the Daintree Rainforest.

  • Escape to Paradise in Port Douglas

Escape to Paradise in Port Douglas

Our writer Natalie Bannister took some time out to travel north to beautiful Port Douglas, and returned boasting about sunny days, tropical nights, stunning scenery, sunset sailing and some serious relaxation. Try not to be jealous… and start planning your next trip here.

"Taking a three day short break from my chilly base in Brisbane and flying north to tropical Port Douglas turned out to be the best cure for the the winter doldrums that had been slowly but surely setting in. With temperatures plummeting to below 12 degrees at home, and a forecast of sunshine and good times on the itinerary up north, happy days were ahead of us. And, as I had not been to Port Douglas in far too many years, I was looking forward to seeing how this peaceful coastal town had changed.

Many Brisbane residents – this writer included – say the city comes into its own in winter and early spring. The humidity, thunderclaps and downpours of summer are gone, replaced by mild, sunny days and clear, star-filled nights.

The months of May to September are ideal for a short, warm, romantic break in the Queensland capital.

Start by treating yourselves to a few nights at the Emporium Hotel in Fortitude Valley – it is streets ahead of other hotels in Brisbane for design and panache. The rooms are sleek and sexy with black, white and golden-brown colour schemes and frangipani-motif panels.
