The swaying palms, warm welcome and laid-back charms of Fiji have long held a special place in the heart of Australians, and are a particular hit with couples considering a destination wedding, or looking for the perfect island honeymoon locations.

In fact, our love affair with this blessed group of isles is so strong that many Australians head back there each year to renew their vows! At around (or less than) four hours flying time from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, why wouldn't you head off to beautiful Fiji for your own couples' holiday at least once a year? Some couples even travel from the other side of the world to discover this South Pacific island paradise, with Fiji a dream destination for many couples living in North America and even in the UK and Europe... though it is much harder for them to reach this island paradise. With more than 300 islands in the archipelago, Australians could easily return each year and discover a new part of Fiji every time!

One of the easiest ways to acquaint yourself with this tropical paradise is to make your first stop Denarau Island. Just a short road transfer from the main airport at Nadi, Denarau offers a taste of Fijian life together with the luxurious trappings of global brands including Hilton, Sheraton and Westin, including a wide variety of beachfront bars and indulgent spas. It is an easy introduction to Fiji and a favourite with honeymooners who do not want to travel too far after their flight. To make the most of your time in Fiji though, consider combining Denaru Island with one of the outer islands - some are easy to reach from the mainland and involve a short boat ride, others may require a seaplane.

While staying in Deanaru, be sure to jump on the local 'Bula' bus, and resort hop your way around the island, stopping for a cocktail here, a couples' massage on the beachfront there and then...  oh, time for more cocktails already? Be sure to time your afternoon cocktail with the gorgeous and beautifully romantic Fijian sunset – truly a special time for couples on a romance holiday or honeymoon to Fiji.

There are also plenty of options if you'd like to sample the fresh and delicious local Fijian fare – many of the resorts offer Fijian traditional BBQ (Lovo) nights, and freshly-hewn coconuts are in ready supply any time of the day. Sip on one of these for a unique dose of tropical bliss!

Want to explore further but not quite ready to transfer to a Fijian island resort for a few night? The local port is the perfect jumping off point for cruising day trips to neighbouring islands with evocative names including Bounty and Treasure. You can snorkel, dive (don't worry if you don't have a licence, Denarau offers various dive courses) or simply wriggle your toes in a powder-fresh patch of sand.

And the best bit? You are guaranteed a friendly welcome in Fiji - the locals are well aware of how special your honeymoon or romantic holiday to Fiji is, and seem to go out of their way to make you feel special, from impromptu songs to their famous full-faced smiles. In fact, "Bula!" is such a regular greeting you'll feel like an island local in no time!
