If you like your romance a little on the rugged side, Oman's Alila Jabal Akhdar (meaning 'Green Mountain') is a breath of fresh mountain air. Opened in April 2014, this is the Middle Eastern debut for luxe Asianbased hotel group Alila, poised on the edge of a rugged gorge, with sweeping views of the Hajar Mountains.

Two hours drive from Oman's capital Muscat, 78 suites, six loft suites and two Jabeal Villas are set in beautifully appointed, low-profile stone buildings resembling flat-roofed Omani houses. In addition to a restaurant, decadent Spa Alila and outdoor and indoor pools, a range of tailored activities are on offer, centred around Alila's signature five themes including Couple Celebration and Active Spirits. At 2000 metres above sea level, this is an escape from the desert heat and an ideal base from which to explore.

Couples will love: the sense of splendid isolation in this dramatically different and beautiful part of the world, together with the warm welcome of the Omani people.
