Gaze up at the stars, or better still, the Northern Lights from a glass dome above your bed, cosy, snug and protected from the sub-zero temperatures and snow outside. This ethereal northern-hemisphere light show (from late August to April) is a mesmerising experience, as ever-changing streaks and funnels of vivid pinks and greens fill the sky. Caused by solar wind particles colliding with air molecules, turning energy into light, one of the best places to witness the aurora borealis is here in the Arctic Circle.
